Local congressional incumbents up for re-election this year have early fundraising leads over their opponents, recent federal campaign finance reports reveal.
If there is a slight exception to that trend it’s Republican Scott Rigell, who raised $350,000 versus nearly $317,000 for his opponent, Democratic U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, from May 20 to June 30.
Rigell gave himself $50,000 and loaned his campaign another $175,000 during the reporting period. To date, Rigell has given $923,000 in loans and contributions to the campaign – much of it paid for his winning primary bid.
Despite Rigell’s recent fund raising edge, Nye had far more in the bank as of June 30: $1.26 million compared to $227,000 for Rigell.
Nye is a first-term incumbent seeking re-election to the 2nd Congressional District, which encompasses Virginia Beach, Accomack and Northampton counties on the Eastern Shore and parts of Norfolk and Hampton.
Independent Kenny Golden is also competing for the seat. A retired Navy veteran who had long been active in Beach and state GOP politics, Golden this spring withdrew from the Republican nominating primary to run as an unaffiliated candidate in November. His campaign raised $3,900 during the most recent reporting period and had $1,300 in the bank.
The 2nd District is one of three congressional jurisdictions which encompass portions of South Hampton Roads.
Squaring off in the 3rd District are longtime incumbent U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott, a Democrat, and Republican activist Chuck Smith, a Marine veteran and attorney.
Scott’s haul for the period was just over $35,000; his ending bank balance was about $59,000. Smith, who for a time was a candidate in the 2nd District race, brought in $6,300 and had about $3,800 on hand.
Libertarian James Quigley is another candidate in the 3rd District, which extends from Hampton Roads to the Richmond area and includes all of Portsmouth and parts of Norfolk, Hampton, Newport News and several counties. Quigley said he hasn’t raised the amount of money that would require him to file a campaign finance report.
U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes is the Republican incumbent in the 4th District which includes Chesapeake, Suffolk and several southeastern and central Virginia localities. Forbes, who calls Chesapeake home, raised $143,000 this period and had more than $451,000 in the bank.
Challenging Forbes is retired Emporia physician Wynne LeGrow, a Democrat. LeGrow tallied nearly $11,800 in contributions for the period and ended with a balance of $11,300.

None of them
None of them get a nod from me until they start speaking specifics about the issues that confront us. Namely the economy number one issue in my book, which Obama has done nothing for except throw money at it, and a lot of it. This constant bickering of what the other candidate has done or hasn't done is getting very old and continues to distance me from politicians all together. Cut the malarky and tell us what you're really going to do.
Little Scotty is ssso sssself serving!
Little Scotty bought his way into the election. We all know that now. However, there is nothing to this man. He is just your ole garden variety Republican, preaching the same dialog that has been out for years and years. He never has any solutions, no vision, and anyone that knows him realizes that his pompous arrogance that he displays on every occasion is nauseating to say the least. Something that neither Republicans nor Democrats nor independents want to witness and be part of in the coming years. Folks, Scotty is running now on the fact that he has money and contributed heavily to Mcdonell and his own campaign. Please do not vote based on his phony and lying ads on TV. He is so self serving. He is a bad choice. Listen hard to Golden and Nye.
Nye
Nye has the "Obama" edge.
Bye, Bye, Nye.
rigell
Rigell has the edge
of McD and Thelma Drake
NO WAY Rigell
Rigell & Nye
I don't know Rigell but I know Nye is an incumbent.....that's enough for me. VOTE THE BUMS OUT. We can show the House of Representatives who is really in charge as all...ALL must be re-elected this November. VOTE THE BUMS OUT!
hysteria over analysis
That's exactly how we got to this mess. It's not the term it's the stupid people that elect idiots to begin with. You seem to be on that course as well.
i dislike rigell so much
I dislike Rigell so much, and for so many reason, I will have to vote for Nye even though he has ticked me off more than once in his first term.
Any candidate that has the support of Thelma Drake and our new govnor.....is a bad choice.
Kenny Golden is a valid choice that we have.
Kenny Golden is the independent candidate, and a former chairman of the Virginia Beach Republican Party. I suggest that you and others visit his website, www.kennygolden.com, to see his common-sense positions on various topics. You may not agree with all of them, but if you read and listen to the info on his website, he presents himself as a valid alternative that should be considered by all. This country has to move away from making election choices based on the old two-party system. We have all seen that each of the major parties have flaws. Both have their own biases. It seems that lately we have been going from one "bad" to another when we change the "ruling" party at any given time. It's been proven time and time again that many of the major party candidates who get very large contributions from big companies and from very rich individuals end up "repaying" in some way in exchange for receiving those large funds. We need to place the government back in the hands of individuals, not parties, and regain control of this country's direction.
hum
not interested in Kenny Golden
The Republicans drove the country into a ditch
The Republicans drove the country into a ditch, now they want us to vote for them again. Sorry, corporate greedheads, I'm voting for Nye.
