Another record as temperature hits 105 degrees

Posted to: News Weather Virginia

By noon Sunday, Hampton Roads set a new daily heat record, with temperatures in Norfolk topping 98 degrees and climbing to 105 in the afternoon., according to the National Weather Service.

The previous record for July 25 was 96 degrees, set in 1987, said Larry Brown, a weather service meteorologist. The temperature outside will likely continue to climb into late afternoon, Brown said, but he wasn't sure whether it would reach the all-time record of 105 that the region sweated through on Saturday.

Brown all but promised that a reprieve was coming as soon as tomorrow. A cold front and winds from the north and northeast would push temperatures down Monday to the upper 80s. "In Norfolk, it might be really quite pleasant," he said.

Mostly sunny skies are expected today with a chance of a late-day shower or thunderstorm. High temperatures will once again be in the upper 90s to lower 100s, with heat index values up to 110 degrees.

A slow-moving cold front will move through tonight and Monday, and stall south of Cape Hatteras. Northeast winds will drop temperatures into the upper 80s for Monday and Tuesday.

hehehe

it is so hot you could fry an egg!...sorry, could not resist!...and my niece thought it was facinating when the egg strted to cook on the deck

latitude

Hampton Roads is on the same latitude with the southern tip of Spain. So it should be no surprise when it gets hot here.

your "scientific" deduction is unsound

We are also at approx. the same latitude as San Francisco - so why aren't they hot in the summer? It has everything to do with prevailing ocean currents and a myriad of other factors.

Simply, the planet is warming. Whether or not it is caused by us remains to be seen. I for one am upgrading my a/c unit.

there's a reason

and it has nothing to do with global warming. san francisco (the lovliest city in the world, bar none!) is cooled by the alaska current, water coming from the icy north. we're on the gulf stream and the water offshore is much hotter.

i am concerned about global warming and quite frankly am more concerned that the worldwide average (in all locations) so far this year is way higher than normal. that truely is global warming, not to pin a cause on it.

when we get our science right (as regards n. cal. and se va.), we're much more believable.

Wait 10,000 years to determine climate change.

If a couple of record high temperatures means global warming, does record cold weather mean global cooling? Over 250 children have died in the last four months because of the unusually cold weather in Peru.
It is ridiculous to think a hot streak in the summer is evidence of climate change. When it was 96 degrees in 1987, did everyone claim global warming? What about other record temperatures throughout the century? We have only kept records for a minuscule amount of time compared to the life of the planet.

Next time substitute temperature for thermostat.

FYI Pilot writers:

A thermostat is a device for regulating the temperature of a system so that the system's temperature is maintained near a desired setpoint temperature. The name is derived from the Greek words thermos "hot" and statos "a standing". The thermostat does this by switching heating or cooling devices on or off, or regulating the flow of a heat transfer fluid as needed, to maintain the correct temperature.
Temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance, which is related to how hot or cold that substance is.

Next time substitute temperature for thermostat.

Ouch..

And it feels so so good to wear body armor in this heat..thank your local Police Officers and Deputies when you see them and offer them some water..

Hmmm

The "thermostat" is going to climb? Really? Why don't you try "thermometer".

LOL

Thermometers don't 'climb' either (wel, I guess they do if you have one in your pocket when you hike,) the temperature goes up.
