CHESAPEAKE
It's Sunday morning and Fathers Day, and more than 100 people have filled the Cinema Cafe theater inside Greenbrier Mall.
Christian music blasts from the speakers as a clock on the movie screen ticks down toward a 10 a.m. start time.
They're not here for a movie. They are here to listen to the Rev. Bob Groves.
It has been a year since Groves, the pastor of Faith Alive Ministries, got up in front of 1,500 of his congregants and apologized for having an affair with a married church staffer.
Groves says he was forced to leave Faith Alive. The church's new pastor said Groves left on his own after failing to complete a clergy restoration program.
Less than four months ago, Groves and his wife started a new church, Genesis Ministry, in a rented theater at Cinema Cafe.
Meanwhile, Faith Alive needs a new home.
The church's $11 million, 46,000-square-foot building in Deep Creek was hit by foreclosure and sold at auction late last month for $7.1 million to another local church, Faith Alive officials said. Faith Alive owed a bank more than $8 million it borrowed to build the sanctuary.
"There was just no way we could pay back all the money that was spent," said Jim Chambers, the church's new lead pastor. "The bottom line is, this congregation, given all that it' s been through, couldn't afford the building."
Little more than 17 months ago, Faith Alive was one of Chesapeake's fastest-growing congregations. The nondenominational, evangelical church had grown from a dozen members to more than 2,000 over 18 years, was celebrating the grand opening of its new sanctuary, and had earned attention from leaders such as Pat Robertson and U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes.
Groves had a high profile in Chesapeake. He served as one of several spiritual mentors on Mayor Alan Krasnoff's 2008 campaign. He gave the opening prayer at the 2009 State of the City address. The new 1,550-seat sanctuary had about $1 million worth of audiovisual equipment, which Groves hoped to use to get on television.
Groves left the church on May 3, 2009, or so many members thought. A month later, Groves stood before a packed house to apologize. Chambers, hired as a consultant, flew in from Georgia to moderate the event. The implication was that Groves was on his way back to return as the church's lead pastor.
From there the accounts differ. Chambers, who was counseling Groves, said Groves left the church after failing to complete a clergy restoration program.
Groves sees things differently.
"I was kicked out," he said. "I was told I was not welcome here."
Said Chambers: "I don't know what he's talking about. He left and never came back."
Chambers became the lead pastor. Soon after taking over, Chambers said he discovered that the church owed more than $8 million.
The major problem was that church membership had fallen from more than 2,000 to as low as 600 or 700 after Groves left, although that figure has jumped back over 1,000, Chambers said. "At the time, there was a lot of money coming in," he said. "It didn't look like there was a problem."
Groves and his wife, Shawn, said they paid all the bills when they were at the church. "All of it was working until it quit working," Groves said.
Chambers said the money spent on the building made it difficult after the popular pastor left.
As Faith Alive struggled, Groves and his wife contemplated their future. He said people asked him frequently to preach again, but for a while he insisted he would not.
"We were done with all of it," Groves said.
It was around Christmas, Groves said, when God started giving him signs that he should return to lead a church. He and his wife said they knew he would be criticized for returning to ministry so soon.
"We would have never done this if we didn't feel God directed this," Groves said.
Genesis Ministry started up March 14 at the Cinema Cafe. Within weeks, the theater had reached its 130-person capacity, and more people stood in the hallway.
Ann Bowes, an eight-year member of Faith Alive, made her first visit to Genesis on Fathers Day, where Groves discussed ongoing battles every man has to fight. Afterward, she said she had tried find another church after Groves left.
"It was not Faith Alive without him," she said. When she'd hear other pastors, "Bob always came back to mind."
Groves said he plans to look for a larger space.
Faith Alive is also searching for a new space. The massive sanctuary was auctioned in June to Virginia Beach's New Life Providence Church, which plans to use the Faith Alive sanctuary as its Chesapeake campus, according to its website.
Chambers said Faith Alive is looking forward to moving on. "The good news is, we owed $8.2 million last week," he said. "This week, we don't. Now we can get back to helping people."
Groves and his wife and are also looking forward. They say they want people to know Groves' backstory before they join and that the new church is about forgiveness.
"If you walk into Genesis knowing the story, you choose to forgive," Shawn Groves said.
Bob Groves said he felt responsible in part for Faith Alive's difficulties.
"We're sad, man," he said. "We've cut all ties. We had to. It was just too hurtful."
As for the $8 million debt, Groves said it was "100 percent out of our control and has been the whole time."
Had he been allowed to return as pastor, Groves said, the church would not have been in such a difficult financial situation. "It doesn't have to be the way that it is," he said.

Not enough time
I'm a pastor in the area. I've just recently been brought up to date on the FAM scandal. I have a couple of thoughts I want to share as a brother in Christ. First, congregations tend to glorify their pastors. I'm lucky (BLESSED) to have a wife who's really good at checking MY ego gracefully. If a pastor lets it get to him, he'll get to thinking of himself first - and that seems to be what happened to Bob G. Second thing: when a pastor isn't nearly always thinking, "How will this help the Kingdom of God?" then ministry can't happen; scandals do. If Bob had been thinking like that all along, he'd have never gone the way he did. Third thing: it takes a lot of work to change your way of thinking, it’s a habit. And it takes a change of scenery, because that’s part of the "habit". People are part of the scenery. Bob shouldn't be ministering to any of his old flock; he should move on. Very Sad.
My post and comments for one week ago
I need to clarify a few things. I am who I say I am. This is not an alias, it's really me. What I have failed, or chose to realize, is that many were, are, and unfortunately will remain hurt because of what happened over a year ago. All of our trusts were violated, and some questioned what they believe. I realized, as I read the comments, that I have unnececarily reopened wounds in many of you. And, in some cases, appeared aloof and judgemental. As I have asked you to forgive Bob and move on, I also ask that you forgive me tonight if I have offended you. This will be my final post on this article, or any other article related to FAM or Bobby. We, each of us, need to realize that we are God's prized possesion. We are treasured by Him, and are highly favored. If we can all walk away from this realizing that, we'll be far better off. May God bless each of you as you continue in your healing processes.
Comments to Danny Dehaven
To DannyDehaven, your responses to the postings concerning Bob Groves, makes me wonder what your agenda is. If it is to be his defender, you have fallen short of that goal. You come off sounding more angry than the people you chastise. You state you have no problem signing your name, but fail to notice others have signed their also. The judgmental tone you use while telling other not to judge comes off very pompous. You overlook the fact that it was Mr.Groves’ interview, (that he agreed to), that put this “in the public forum”. You dismiss the reader that states Mr. Groves was removed from the Church of God in Tennessee as though only you know the truth. Reread the postings from former members of FAM and you will see that Mr. Groves’ behavior was not proper for a long time. The former members I have talked to personally state the same problem. That’s why they are going to other churches. Your answer to Pastorrick show that you are out to attack rather than to know what the Bible (God) has to say about the qualifications needed to be a Leader of a church. Please reread it. A lot of people can be charismatic speakers, but to be a Pastor you need the biblical qualificati
I find it rather curious
I find it rather curious that no one is brave enough to put their name on any article they write. I had and have no problem putting my name to anything I say or write. My familys first experience at FAM was the last service in the "Red Sea" before moving to Shell Road. We attended there until I was called to play piano for another church in the area five years later. What hatred, backbiting, and un-Christlike behavior all of you are exhibiting!
Was I angry and disappointed in Bobby when I first heard of this? Of course I was! It pains me now to think about it. But, who am I, or ANY of you to blog, or input in a public forum for Goodness sake, where non-believers can come to, at any given moment, and get fodder for their unbelief. I have forgiven Bobby, and the other person involved. (Yes, I know who she is.) People, it's time to move on! The time is at hand for the Lord's return, and this isn't helping the cause. Not at all. If you still carry ill-will in your heart, go to your alter, and ask forgiveness. May God Bless those who love and call on His name!
Rather curious
To Danny, I recognize that you say you are using your real name; however, the content of your many responses makes me wonder if that name is really alias for Bobby Groves, Jr. The remarks you make read as though you are defending yourself. If you are Danny and that name is not alias for Bobby, give these other folks a break. They have a right to speak from their heart and especially from the scriptures. What they are saying speaks for many of us who do not know how to put it in words.
We have been hurt, we have forgiven Bob but we await his making amends and his following a sincere restoration for himself and his family.
I am who I say I am. Please
I am who I say I am. Please read the post I am getting ready to write. For many reasons, this will be my final submission. Thank You and God bless you!
Letting Go
WootWoot seems to think that people were let go by Dr. Chambers as a personal attack of some kind. The truth is that the previous Admin. hired people that wasted time and the churches money. We all have jobs and if we wasted money, time and resorces we would be let go too. Along with that, have you ever hear of "down sizing?' He had to cut the budget to the bone and some people had to go. It happens. We all have suffered in this. When God closes one door He opens another. Bottom line....again...It's not about anyone but God and His work. GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON!!!!!!!!
is anyone paying attention?
Bob obviously shouldnt be preaching anymore so I'm not gonna kick that dead horse, but what about Chambers? Has anyone taken a second to ponder why no less than 15 staff members have been fired/ "let go" or systematically forced into resignation from pastors to custodians since his "reign" began? These are people we served with, some for many years, these people gave so much to FAM, they prayed with/for us, they taught us, they taught our children, they stayed all hours to make events happen, they loved on us for years and were very dedicated to what they were doing UNTIL Chambers become pastor,(not by their vote I might add). We are supposed to beleive they just walked away? These people worked with him behind closed doors, has anyone once asked them about Chambers character or the real reasons they are no longer on staff?
Go to the Source for Info
Why not go sit down with Dr. Chambers and let him show you the facts about the former staff members like many of us have instead of making comments about his leadership. It is one thing to make public comments, but another to actually sit down and look at all they did to deserve dismissal. If you did half of what these folks did you would have been fired in a moment, but he was very gracious throughout the entire processs.
If you're unhappy, LEAVE!
If you're unhappy, LEAVE! It's just that simple. FAM is in the battle of it's life, and yet, you feel the need to stir the pot? Let it go...
