Feds to fund study of Chesapeake Bay microorganisms

Posted to: Environment News Virginia

ANNAPOLIS, Md.

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science is launching a new study of Chesapeake Bay microorganisms.

U.S. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger plans to announce federal funding for the study Monday at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's headquarters in Annapolis.

The Baltimore County congressman says blue crab and oysters have been studied for years. However, the microorganism study will be the first of its kind and will help researchers better understand the environment in which crabs, oysters and other key commercial species live. That is expected to eventually lead to healthier and more productive fisheries.

Ruppersberger says the bay supports more than 28 million jobs in the fishing, seafood, aquaculture, tourism and recreation industries.

Wonder

how much this is going to cost. Nobody wants to talk about that. Another waste of taxpayers' money.
