NORFOLK

Rear Adm. Nora Tyson will become the first woman to take command of a carrier strike group in a ceremony Thursday aboard the carrier George H.W. Bush at Norfolk Naval Station.

Tyson will assume command of Carrier Strike Group 2 from Capt. Jeffrey Hesterman, the acting commander.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Tyson is a 1979 graduate of Vanderbilt University. She earned her wings as a naval flight officer in 1983 and received a master's degree in national security and strategic affairs from the U.S. Naval War College in 1995.

As commander of the Norfolk-based amphibious assault ship Bataan, Tyson led the Navy's disaster relief efforts on the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Under her command, the Bataan deployed twice to the Persian Gulf in support of the Iraq war.

Other tours at sea included duty as assistant operations officer aboard the training carrier Lexington and as navigator aboard the carrier Enterprise.

She has served most recently as executive assistant to Adm. Gary Roughead, the chief of naval operations. Roughead will be on hand for the 3:30 p.m. ceremony.

The Norfolk-based Bush is America's newest aircraft carrier. The 10th and final Nimitz-class carrier, it was commissioned Jan. 10, 2009. It is preparing for its maiden deployment in 2011.

Tyson will lead a complement of ships and aircraft that includes the cruisers Philippine Sea, Gettysburg, Monterey, and Vella Gulf; the destroyers Bainbridge, James E. Williams, Mahan, Nitze, Mitscher, and Truxtun, the frigates Carr and Hawes; and Carrier Air Wing 8.

EA

At any level, the Executive Assistant job is never easy. You've got to be an extremely capable person to be the EA for the Chief of Naval Operations.

You Go Nora!

I served with Nora Tyson on the Enterprise and she was a great leader then and watched over her people like a mother hen. She was married to a master chief at that time so she definitely has been indoctrinated to the enlisted way way of life! What a great choice for a flag officer.

So proud of you RADM Tyson

This is the most squared away sailor I know. My husband served under her a couple years ago and she was wonderful. Congratulation RADM Tyson, I know you'll do a phenomenal job!

Rear Admiral

She's a 1-star. The abbreviation is RDML. A 2-star is abbreviated RADM.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations & Good Luck!

new Job

Good Luck and God,s Speed

This officer appears to have

This officer appears to have earned her stars. Is the Navy ready for a female CNO??

You Go Girl!

Looking at the photo of her that the Pilot provided; she appears to be One Tough Cookie.

Impressive resume!

"A native of Memphis, Tenn., Tyson is a 1979 graduate of Vanderbilt University. She earned her wings as a naval flight officer in 1983 and received a master’s degree in *national security and strategic affairs* from the U.S. Naval War College in 1995."

Now this is an incredible woman and perfect replacement for "Gov. Napolitano"!

Best of luck to her!

Any Navy person would be a better replacement for Gov Napo.

But it would be nice if Pilot would include Tyson's entire resume of assignments- especially the squadrons she served in, aircraft and flight time as an NFO, etc. during the 10 years prior to going to War College, just to know who she was before joining the fast track.
