The man killed Monday in a car crash on Interstate 664 was a renowned African journalist who spent much of his career fighting for a free press in the small nation of Cameroon.
P ius Njawe, 53, had arrived in the United States just three days before and was traveling from Washington to Chesapeake to visit relatives, State Police Sgt. R.W. Walker said Tuesday.
Njawe was almost there when a tractor-trailer rear-ended the car he was riding in, killing him and critically injuring the car's driver, 29-year-old Eric T. Wande of Washington.
Police believe the car had stopped in the left-center lane of the four-lane highway near the Bowers Hill interchange when it was struck.
"We don't know the reason yet," Walker said. The driver of the car was conscious and talking Monday evening, but he could not recall the accident.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as 64-year-old John Moore Jr. of Chesapeake, suffered injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.
Njawe's relatives in Chesapeake declined to comment Tuesday. But news of his death spread quickly over the Internet.
Njawe was 22 when he founded Cameroon's first independent newspaper 31 years ago and soon raised the ire of the government, said Alison Bethel McKenzie of the International Press Institute.
His paper, The Messenger, was shut down multiple times, and Njawe left the country in 1992 after receiving death threats. He returned a year later to found the Cameroon Organization for Press Freedom, according to a biography of Njawe on the institute's website, www.freemedia.at/.
Njawe was arrested dozens of times for his criticism of Cameroonian leaders, McKenzie said. Officials harassed his staff, took his office equipment and confiscated his newspapers.
Njawe spent 10 months in prison in 1998 for "spreading false news."
"I'm paying for having preferred my independence to compromise," he wrote during his time there, according to the biography.
Njawe was later pardoned.
The International Press Institute referred to him as "Cameroon's most beleaguered journalist and one of Africa's most courageous fighters for press freedom."
The organization named him a World Press Freedom Hero in 2000. Njawe was also a recipient of the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists, according to the tribute.
"The African media has lost a truly courageous individual whose bravery in the face of government intimidation served as an inspiration for other journalists in similar circumstances across the continent," the institute's director, David Dadge, is quoted as saying in a tribute on its website.
Njawe's wife was killed in 2002 when the car she was traveling in near their home in Cameroon was side-swiped, McKenzie said. In the aftermath, Njawe founded an organization to promote safe driving.

Sad
Such a shame.
RIP, Mr. Njawe.
A true loss for the people of Cameroon, and his family.
It is funny how people who
It is funny how people who drive reckless will act like it's your fault when they cut you off on the road or do anything else that can cause an accident, and if you gesture to them about it, they will flip you the bird or say the "f" word followed by the word "you". It's a shame this man lost his life like this. We don't know the full details about what happened, so we can speculate. If what is true according to the Pilot, being stopped on the Interstate is not good especially when a tractor-trailer is coming. They think they own the road and can do whatever they want. Whenever I am driving and they get behind and tail-gate me, I just move into another lane. Most of them are probably half sleep behind the wheel anyway.
Thank you for saying...
"We don't know the full details about what happened, so we can speculate". Was the truck driver drunk or driving past 50 in that area?
Many people have made RUDE comments about this family instead of sending condolences. They are greiving! Kristin Davis from the Pilot was not there, the police were not there and have said "we are not sure what really happen"...but ASSUME...we THINK...! The driver of the Lexus has not spoken and this accident is still under investigation. Either way...what is a truck doing in the far left lane of a five lane highway? They were visiting family...so who is the say this was their first time in this area?If he got out of the car...would the driver be dead and thrown...not in the car? How can they assume the car was disabled? If the tire was flat, would spare tire be out of the car? Wouldn't he have gotten over in the right lane ? What about the drivers responsibility to stay two car lengths from the driver in front of them? A lot of questions that we dont know the answer to.
Thank you again for your respect.
Its so sad but they were five minutes from there destination! But God has the master map in life!
Sorry to read of his death...
He sounded like an interesting man filled with drive and passion. May God comfort his loved ones.....
I hope other people already know this but..
When your car is slowing down or the engine cuts off turn on your blinker and GET OVER.
How dare you?
Where you there glennf1??? What about your condolences? Do you know what the family is going though with one dead and one injured and property damage and mental stress....that may affect many aspect of there lives and their families?
You must assume that there were just two Black foreigners that just got there drivers licenses?? Do you know the truck shouldn't have never been in the far left lane of a five lane highway? Do you know what speed limit the truck was driving?
What about the drivers responsibility to stay two car lengths from the driver in front of them?
Stop the assuming! You are making an ASS-U-ME!
Yeah, that's pretty fundamental
And I bet the driver knew that too. Anything could have happened but we weren't there.
Yes your comment is right..
It is fundamental and common sense! We were not there and we only assume what who were not there are assuming ...and what a driver and his company are hoping for the public to believe.
How sad.........
So not fair.....after going through so much, only to lose his life because a car problem.
Prayers to his daughter.
