Crooner Buble’s swingin’ style gets the crowd to swoon

If a Martian had landed Wednesday night at The Ted, he would have sworn that women rule planet Earth.

They were in abundance – and vocal – at the swingin’, no-holds-barred performance by Michael Buble.

The Frank Sinatra-inspired singer clearly inspires the ladies.

“He has old-world charm, and he’s a clean-cut chap,” said Johnna Nesham of Virginia Beach. “It’s nice to see that in this day and age.”

The show reminded me of youthful time well spent in New York City theaters during the swing era.

And it did the old heart good to see so many young folks in the sold-out crowd that enthusiastically embraced Buble, his excellent band and the opening act, Naturally 7.

Some of the best moments came when Buble’s Big Boy Band took over, especially some Maynard Ferguson -inspired trumpet work by Jumaane Smith .

The musicians wore suits and ties and sometimes formed a background chorus – more reminders of the swing era.

Buble opened with “Cry Me A River,” which, like all of his material, benefited from an outstanding arrangement.

Most of his songs were gems of old, such as “Mack the Knife ” and “Georgia On My Mind,” which he called a personal favorite.

Opening act Naturally 7 was reminiscent of The Mills Brothers of the 1930s and ’40s. The singers use their voices as instruments, and their harmony, comedy and timing were perfect.

Sheila Glasscock of Camden, N.C., came to the concert as a Valentine’s Day gift from her husband. She was impressed with Buble .

“Michael is a great artist who can perform everything,” she said.

But, as Buble noted , the event was more than just a performance: “This isn’t a concert – it’s a party.”

Michael Buble' Norfolk concert

When you leave a Michael Buble' concert...you feel like you just received the sweetest kiss ever. Best concert I've ever been to.

Michael Buble Concert

It was my second Michael Buble Concert and it was awesome. He is such a great entertainer and sooooooo funny.

It was my third show as well

and he never, ever disappoints. Last night's performance (or "party" as Michael would call it) was all things Buble. Amazing musicianship by the band, hilarious banter from Michael, audience involvement and Michael's smooth swinging singing. Every song in the set was a gem. I love the age diversity of the Buble audience. It ranges from little girls attending their first show to elderly couples enjoying music they first courted to. "If chocolate could sing, it would sound like Michael Buble." I didn't make that up, but it is oh-so-true. If you missed it, you missed it.

Michael Buble Concert

What a show!! My third time seeing him and he is outstanding. Any and every time he's anywhere close, I WILL BE THERE!! The concert was a Valentine's Day gift from my husband that I waited so patiently for 5 1/2 months for him to come to Norfolk!! If there's anyone who is wondering Who is Michael Buble? - listen to any of his songs or videos online and you will be hooked. He is an amazing singer, entertainer and even comedian who shares his love of music with the audience and is very appreciative of his fans. Since I was in the third row, I could see him crying during the last song of the encore because he is so humble and grateful for his fans. He is a must see!!

In a Way...........

..............I was there as Local Crew to set-up and break down the Stage...............does that count?

I DID get to hear app 45 minutes from backstage, was cool.

Did you go?
