Norfolk council to interview three for vacant seat

Posted to: News Norfolk

NORFOLK

Former School Board member Alveta Green, New Journal & Guide publisher Brenda Andrews, or former Norfolk State University administrator Jimmie D. Wilson will be appointed to the vacant Ward 7 City Council seat.

The council picked the finalists from a list of 17 people who nominated themselves. They will be interviewed in public by the council at 3 p.m. Thursday at City Hall. The council could fill the vacancy that day.

The newest council member will serve until a November special election.

Councilwoman Daun S. Hester was required to step down June 30 with two years left in her term because she challenged Mayor Paul Fraim in the May election.

Wilson, an NSU graduate, is a former legislative aide to Del. Algie Howell Jr., D-Norfolk.

Andrews was one of the first four black children to desegregate schools in Lynchburg. She has been with the Journal & Guide, a newspaper that focuses on African American issues, since 1982.

Green is a Norfolk native who served seven years on the School Board after a 34-year career as a Norfolk schoolteacher.

Councilman Paul R. Riddick said he probably will favor Green.

Vice Mayor Anthony L. Burfoot said he hasn't made up his mind, " but I do think it's important that we have a woman's perspective."

Theresa Whibley is the only woman on the seven-member council.

Mayor Fraim challenged by Dawn Hester?

At least Hester was voted in, to her seat. We met randomly, at JANAF; spoke frankly about Norfolk City Council at length. She should be applauded for caring, while Fraim should go as two council seats, replaced May 4th, after 30+ years. We discussed the political corruption ousting Barbara Saunders from her post (NRHA). No matter of sexism or racism: anyone challenging the powers pockets lined by developers/special interests, at risk. To quote O'Neill, "All politics is local" - challenge our council, have a conscience: branded a renegade or worse. Bless Ms. Hester et al. who risk hard-earned status with by those destroying our communities. www.rkpuma.com/forum

Riddick

Why wasn't Riddick required to resign his city council seat? Oh, yeah....he was elected to the "PLUM JOB" and that don't require any thinking! He'll fit good with HRT, both are useless!

Thank you City Council...

...for not caring about the best person for the job but for filling the council with partisan cronies. Is there any citizens in Norfolk who actually care what Riddick the Racist thinks?

be unique norfolk!

How about the BEST person for the job, regardless of race or sex? Opps, this is Norfolk, sorry!

Why are whites and other

Why are whites and other minorities not represented or being considered?

Whites?

Whites have the majority of the seats on the council already in a city that is almost equally white/black. Maybe even more black than white after the 2010 census. The superwards were created so that the city would have one white and one black superward. If you ask me, the whole ward systems needs to be redrawn but that takes permission of congress or something. Lastly, it does not matter what race or gender is on the council, behind closed doors they all vote the same to keep themselves rolling in a little extra dough.
