NORFOLK

Angelia Williams, a 38-year-old Realtor who works part time for the commissioner of revenue, has announced she will run in the Nov. 2 special election for the Ward 7 City Council seat.

Williams, who frequently attends council meetings, said the city's budget troubles likely will be the major issue of the campaign.

"Everyone is being asked to do more with less money. We need to make the best use of every dollar that citizens entrust us with," she said.

A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and Tidewater Community College, Williams has a background steeped in politics. Her father, the late I. Joseph Williams, was bishop of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Berkley for more than three decades. Politicians often came to the church in search of African American support.

"I grew up knowing people like Paul Fraim and Doug Wilder," she said of the Norfolk mayor and former governor. An Ingleside resident, Williams said she has been preparing for a run for local office for years.

She is the second candidate to announce. Planning Commission member Earl Fraley Jr. previously announced he will run. Former Norfolk State University administrator Jimmie D. Wilson and Michael Muhammad, a political consultant, have said they might run.

Daun S. Hester was forced by the city charter to relinquish her Ward 7 seat June 30 with two years left in her term because she ran for mayor in May. The council appointed Alveta Green to fill Hester's seat temporarily. The winner of the November election will serve the final 19 months of her term. Ward 7 encompasses half of the city.

Williams plans a campaign kickoff at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 at Antioch Baptist. She has a campaign Web site: www.angeliaforcouncil.com.

I've know Angela for years

I've known Angela for years, and she will make a great city councilwoman. You go girl!

OMG realtors aren't human.

OMG realtors aren't human. They and their lobbyists have done enough damage.

Give the woman a break

She's hunting work. As a realtor she knows well the plight of the common man, at least those of us who pay taxes because we actually work. Foreclosures reached their highest rate in ten years (it's the economy, genius), no jobs (it's the economy, genius) and O-B-Wanna-Be clueless on job creation or the economy. He'd make a dandy vacation travel agent with all of this summer's vacationing.

As far as steeped in politics, just because a politician eats breakfast in your diner does not make you "steeped" in politics. Coffee, maybe. Not politics.

give me a break

Apparently you are NOT aware of the vaction time George W. Bush spent when he was in office. Try looking it up before you comment.

Seems like a nice and capable person

My question is, how closely is she tied in with Democrat Commissioner of Revenue Sharon McDonald, who per the Pilot, has a long record of questionable exdenditures and long absenses from Norfolk. McDonald reportely spent excessive amounts of time lobbying in Richmond on taxpayer money, and without the approval of Norfolk City. Democrat Mayor Paul Fraim even called for financial investigations into McDonald's spending of Norfolk money over the past several years.

grew up

she grew up knowing Doug Wilder????? Then NO thank you!

Wager

I'll wager that you know Doug Wilder too.
