VIRGINIA BEACH

The gifted-education resource teacher at Brandon Middle School has been named Outstanding Middle School Teacher of the year by the Curry School of Education Foundation.

The annual award is presented to an exemplary graduate of the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education.

Carolyn C. Stamm, who has taught in Beach public schools for 22 years, has been at Brandon Middle since 2007.

"I share this honor with the students and teachers I have worked with over the years who have given me support and who have shared a love for learning," Stamm said Friday.

She was named the school division and region's Outstanding Teacher of the Gifted in 2009 and coaches her school's Academic Challenge and Math Counts competition teams. She has also taught at Kemps Landing Magnet, Kempsville Middle and Old Donation Center.

"The students at Brandon call her 'the brain coach,' " the school's principal, Catherine S. Rogers, wrote in her nomination letter. "The teachers call her 'Wonder Woman,' and I call her 'the miracle worker.'

"She works around the clock and on weekends to ensure that students and teachers will have high quality assignments, and she is dedicated to having every child exposed to rigorous, engaging work."

Stamm graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1979 and got her master's degree in education at Curry in 1987. Her award, along with $500 for professional development, will be presented at a banquet in September.

making Brandon proud

C is an integral part of the professional teaching team at Brandon. She is an excellent choice for the award.

Incredibly Deserved

Mrs. Stamn was the Gifted Education teacher at Kempsville Middle in the mid 90s. Though I was not in the Gifted Program, I participated in several activities with those students and she always treated as an equal amongst my peers. She was my coach for the 4 years that I participated in Future Problem Solving at KMS and KHS. She always pushed us think more critically, yet more creatively. Mrs. Stamn showed me how to gain a far greater understanding of a subject than can be gleaned from simply reading about it. Her teachings have been critical to my successes in school, work and life and I am sure everyone she has taught since then has been equally enriched. She is incredibly deserving of this honor. Congratulations Mrs. Stamn!

Unfortunaltey She Couldnt Teach Me How To Spell

I'm still misspelling her name 15 years later.
