VIRGINIA BEACH

A judge on Monday ordered a Virginia Beach man who killed his mother to be committed to state custody.

Circuit Judge H. Thomas Padrick Jr. agreed that Michael Osman needs to receive more inpatient hospitalization.

In May, Osman pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the Dec. 7 slaying of his 73-year-old mother, Carolyn Goldman Osman.

With the plea, Osman was acquitted of first-degree murder, but he was placed in custody for an evaluation to determine whether he should be committed.

The former registered nurse had been scheduled to take her son to traffic court that morning, but her son had stopped taking his medication for paranoid schizophrenia.

Osman's attorney has said the man has been fighting mental illness for at least 23 years. He will return to court for another hearing on July 26, 2011.
