A College of William and Mary student was killed Sunday morning as he tried to switch Washington, D.C., Metro trains, according to a letter on the school’s website.

Joseph Doyle, a rising third-year law student, was hit by a train about 3 a.m., wrote Ginger Ambler, vice president for student affairs. The notice was posted on the site Monday.

Doyle, of Oklahoma, graduated from the University of Virginia in 2004 and was working this summer at a Washington law firm. He planned to study in Spain this fall.

The letter to students described Doyle as being interested in election law. He worked for the Virginia State Board of Elections after his first year of law school and had worked on a senate campaign in his home state in 2004.
