VIRGINIA BEACH
The city's public schools will be fully accredited by the state this year, Superintendent Jim Merrill announced Tuesday.
All Beach schools have been accredited for five of six years. Last year, 98 percent of the state's schools were fully accredited.
State accreditation is based on test scores in English, math, history and science. It is separate from federal benchmarks that are also based on state Standards of Learning tests.
Merrill said English, math and history pass rates were above 80 percent in all 55 elementary schools. Science pass rates were above 92 percent in all the middle schools, and pass rates were above 84 percent in all four subjects at all high schools. In total, 81 Beach schools will be accredited. Merrill called the numbers "evidence we're on the right path."

Since you object, the new figure should be 30%.
Since you object, the new figure should be 30%. You obviously expect something for nothing in life. In Virginia Beach teachers are in their third year of no pay increase. Sessoms and City Council have plenty of money for a choo choo train.
For Santa
Glad to hear our property taxes will be going up to support Santa's 20% pay raise.
Way to Go VA Beach Schools!
Mikewill - did you ever go to a public school? Hopefully you had at least one caring, hard working, and dedicated teacher. Maybe the economy has let you down right now, as it has for teachers in the past 3 years, but I am glad to see that teacher persist despite no raises. NO Hampton Roads schools are yet at the national teacher's average annual salary. Teaching is the mother of all occupations.
In other news, how did the other local divisions do on their SOLs? It becomes harder and harder every year. The state and federal government is going to have a mess to deal with before 2012.
Schools
This is good news. It's so good to be here.
Too bad public school haters refuse to acknowledge success....
According to public school haters: teachers never have anything to do with student achievement or success. Teachers are the cause of failure, not success. It's only a coincidence that schools get accredited. It won't be long before the school haters find something to criticize about the full accreditation of all beach schools. Unfortunately, many politicians have been successful in creating animosity towards public schools but it appears they have not yet been successful at destroying public education. Teachers, keep doing the great job that you do and keep teaching in spite of the ignorant politicians and educational beaurocrats who make your jobs even harder to carry out.
The teachers deserve a 20% pay increase.
Virginia Beach teachers are 100% responsible for the 100% pass rate.
The teachers deserve a 20% pay increase. The School Board and Dan Edwards as well as the City Council are cheapskates.
