Code Orange air quality today in Hampton Roads

Posted to: Environment News Weather

An air quality alert has been issued for Hampton Roads today with high temperatures expected to reach the mid-90s.

The Department of Environmental Quality has issued a Code Orange air quality alert because of ground-level ozone pollution.

Older adults and young children as well as people with lung disease or heart ailments are advised to limit outdoor activity, according to the agency.

Ground-level ozone, the main ingredient in smog, is a colorless gas that forms when sunlight combines with vehicle exhaust, gasoline fumes, solvent vapors and industrial emissions, according to the agency.

There is a yellow-orange haze hugging the Chesapeake Bay today.

I can only imagine what it's doing to my lungs.

The cold front will clear it out by the weekend.

Get ready for more days like today.
