The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles said it would not be able to process driver's licenses or identification cards again today because of continued problems with the state's computer systems.
Problems began Wednesday about 3 p.m. and affected 27 of the state's 89 agencies, according to a statement sent late Monday from Secretary of Technology Jim Duffey. The statement was sent from the Virginia Information Technologies Agency.
By Sunday night, all but three or four agencies had their systems restored: DMV, the Department of Taxation and the State Board of Elections, according to the statement. Other agencies have had minor issues.
Gov. Bob McDonnell says he wants an investigation into a massive computer failure that has crippled some government agencies for days.
McDonnell said Monday he wanted an independent, third party to perform an "operational and performance review" of the problems with the Virginia Information Technologies Agency.
Part of the review will include determining whether contractor Northrop Grumman should reimburse the state for lost business and productivity.
The DMV has been posting updates on its website and its phone system.
And though temporary disabled parking placards were still available from DMV offices, the computer outage may delay customers’ receipt of the permanent placards in the mail, the news release said. Placards purchased during the outage will be valid until at least Sept. 16.
All other transactions at the DMV are being processed as usual, the news release said. Licenses can be renewed online at www.dmvNOW.com or by phone at (888) 337-4782.
When service resumes, the DMV is anticipating high customer volume. Issuance of driver's licenses will be a top service priority.
The DMV said that if your driver's license or ID card expires during the state computer outage and you must renew in person at a DMV office, you will need to bring additional documentation to renew when service is restored to verify U.S. citizenship or legal presence in the country. A birth certificate or passport will work. Additional documents accepted are listed here: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/apps/documentbuilder/intro.aspx.

Va drivers get their licenses from the DMV?
From the comments section of this site I would have thought you all got them from Cracker Jacks boxes as the secret prize inside.
Hey VA welcome to the
Hey VA welcome to the future. I guess this is a sample of the "Cloud Computing" where the pros manage all your data so you don't have to worry about a thing.
Anyone know?
Does anyone know which DMVs are up and running??
LOst business?
"Part of the review will include determining whether contractor Northrop Grumman should reimburse the state for lost business and productivity."
Please explain to me how business is lost? Is wal mart issuing drivers liscenses now? Or is that a new item at your local BJ's? Yes their productivity is in the crapper but when they get the problem fixed they will get all of their business back. Kinda illegal to drive with out a licsense!!
They should get norfolk to do a study!!
The real cash cow
To all those who complain that traffic enforcement efforts are nothing but an income source for Va, here's a real live moo'ing violation cash cow complete with horns and tail and female-specific physical lactational attachments. Your license has expired, you can't get it replaced, you get stopped at a check point and the Va. Highway patrol says that is not, repeat, N*O*T! a valid excuse. I haven't heard what local police are doing, but I'd almost bet the same thing. Now is the time to make your voices heard at governmental levels.
State Computer Outage
Many of us within state government have been warning FOR YEARS that something like this was going to happen. According to the public statements, NG created a single point of failure through a storage device. Can you believe that? A storage device failure brought down state government.
There obviously is no redundancy or fail-over systems in Chesterfield. Sam Nixon said that the outage was of "insignificant magnitude" to warrant switching over to the back-up facility in Southwest Virginia. If DMV and Tax being down doesn't warrant switching over to the back-up facility, what does? Is the SW facility really not ready? The taxpayers are getting raped, and NG is going to continue the carnage until they're just too tired to do so any more.
We don't have to worry about cyber terrorism. We have Northrop Grumman.
Northrup Grumman
Remember these headlines? "Northrop Grumman Corp. employs more than 900 workers in positions that work directly with JFCOM" and "JFCOM has awarded a $1 billion joint contract to a consortium composed of Northrop Grumman, ----". If N.G. can't get its act together supporting the state of Virginia what the heck are they doing for DOD at JFCOM??!! Little wonder why Secretary of Defense want to eliminate them.
Penalties
Yes there should be penalties, that stuff is built into contracts for non performace. I would say this is non performance, and what about the backup data center out near Roanoke why have they not swithced this work to that center to keeps things going, that is what it was built for, with taxpayer money. I work in privite industry IT and I can tell you we would have already had the systems up on our DR site and running after this many days. I expect to see penalties assessed against NG, and they can then go after EMC to pay them back, since EMC seems to be the culprit here.
