FORT MILL, S.C.
Adam Donachie smacked a two-out, two-run home run in the eighth inning to send the Norfolk Tides to a 7-6 win over Charlotte on Thursday night. Norfolk overcame a six-run deficit to earn its second consecutive victory.
The blast came off reliever Greg Aquino and followed a single by Blake Davis, who went 3 for 4 after hitting a grand slam in Wednesday's contest.
The Knights jumped to an early 6-0 lead off Norfolk starter Chris Tillman, who surrendered six runs (four earned) in 2 2/3 innings. Tillman, considered one of the top prospects in the Orioles' organization, will likely have two more outings to prove he deserves a call-up to Baltimore in September.
The bullpen combination of Jim Hoey, Frank Mata and Dennis Sarfate allowed four hits in 6 1/3 scoreless frames to keep the Tides alive and take Tillman off the hook.
Norfolk battled back with two runs in the fifth, aided by a Fernando Cortez throwing error.
The Tides added another three in the sixth, taking advantage of run-scoring doubles by Rhyne Hughes, Davis and Paco Figueroa.
Following Donachie's homer, manager Bobby Dickerson turned to Sarfate for a six-out save.
He allowed two hits in the eighth but did not relinquish the tying run.
