The Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy voiced opposition Friday to Gov. Bob McDonnell's proposal to privatize liquor stores.
The state's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control "is a well-run agency that is a consistent source of government revenue," the interfaith center said in a report, "Off the Wagon: Why ABC Privatization is a Bad Idea."
Looking at the experience of other states, "the fact is, privatization has not resulted in the economic boon some legislators hope it might, and the downside social risks are very high," said C. Douglas Smith, the executive director of the center, in a statement. Low-income communities, in particular, would bear "the social costs associated with the increased availability of distilled spirits," the study said.
McDonnell has said that by selling licenses to businesses to market liquor, the state would reap an additional $300 million to $500 million for much-needed transportation projects.
"Beer and wine are already sold privately in Virginia," Taylor Thornley, a spokeswoman for McDonnell, wrote in an e-mail Friday. "There is no reason distilled spirits should be treated differently, and no reason Virginians should forfeit the hundreds of millions of dollars for transportation that privatization will provide."

Do They Know Their Own Bible?
" Jesus sat at the table took the WINE, blessed it and gave it to his disciples." "Jesus said I will not drink the WINE again until I drink it anew in the Kingdom of Heaven!" I doubt that this wine was alcohol free! So where do these people get their info? From Mullah Omar or maybe Glen Beck.
Why are people listening to
Why are people listening to them? Why do they have a say in this at all? They don't.
Good!
Now let the group insist that Sacramental Wine not be sold without a Bishop's prescription saying that it is needed for the practice of religion.
Faith based groups should not be regulating anything, other than their own faith.
I always appreciate when
I always appreciate when religous organizations step up to the plate to run the Government. (That pesky Constitution is so unnecessary...)
All about the money. State
All about the money. State income derived from a commodity that in excess tears apart families, destroys the human body, and causes numerous automobile fatalities.
I have nothing against responsible drinking, but, on the other hand the state is profiting on alcohol that is the cause and effect of much misery on those they sell it to. Doesn't really make sense, does it. What we have here is a serious moral dilemma.
Faith group
I agree with the faith groups on this one...the social risk are high as they mentioned (not to mentioned those cooked up numbers the gov threw out to bring in quick cash)
I went to Daytona last year, walked a block and found their version of a privatized liquer store...frightening!!!!!! The way you got your purchase was to ring the doorbell, a guy walks up thorugh the next door establishment which was a nude gogo bar, he unlocks the door, identifies himself as the manager of the abc store in addition to his bouncer responsibilities at the goo bar next door....I joked with him and asked him if the goo also sold liquer, he said no, they have to get it from their since the bar has to be non alcoholic, but he said If I wanted to go inside with the bottle, order a coke and put the liquer in it, he would turn his head......welcome to privatized liquer...
