Hurricane Guide: Do you need to evacuate?

Posted to: Hurricanes - Storms Weather

An evacuation order doesn’t mean everyone must leave – sometimes you are safer at home.

Evacuation orders are meant for those in low-lying areas vulnerable to storm surge and flooding. If you’re on higher ground, you might not need to evacuate. See the storm surge maps in this guide or at www.vaemergency.com/threats/hurricane/stormsurge.cfm to determine where your home or office falls.

If you stay at home …

Local instructions will order you to stay where you are or “shelter in place.”

- Remain inside until emergency officials say it’s safe to leave. Close doors and windows.

- Follow your family emergency plan. Prepare one ahead of time using downloadable worksheets from www.readyvirginia.gov/makeaplan.

- Locate your disaster kit. (See this page for assembly and tips.)

- Tune to a local radio station for information.
