The Navy dispatched a second wave of ships Friday to support relief efforts in Pakistan, although the vessels may not reach the flood-ravaged country until October.
The amphibious assault ship Kearsarge, the amphibious transport dock Ponce and the dock landing ship Carter Hall - all based in Norfolk and Virginia Beach - are carrying roughly 4,000 sailors and Marines.
It could take the ships about a month to reach the Pakistani coast, which is more than 7,000 miles away.
It's not yet clear how long the Kearsarge group will stay. The ships' biggest role will probably be as a logistics hub for moving supplies, victims and rescue crews, said Capt. Larry Grippin, the group's commander.
"That's what our capabilities lend themselves to," he said. "But really we'll be there to support the relief effort in any way the Pakistani government asks us to."
The ships are carrying Navy and Marine Corps helicopters that will allow crews to reach the whole of the country while remaining sea-based, said Col. Mark Desens, who heads the contingent of Marines on board, the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Lejeune, N.C.
The ships did not deploy with food or other relief materials but will probably pick them up from supply ships closer to Pakistan, Grippin said.
The Kearsarge is equipped to provide medical treatment for flood victims; it keeps a 600-bed hospital and deployed with a team of surgeons.
The Kearsarge group will join the amphibious assault ship Peleliu, based in San Diego, which reached Pakistan soon after the flooding began.
The Navy hasn't made public any plans to send additional vessels.
The Kearsarge originally was scheduled to deploy to the Middle East on a peacekeeping mission in late September. The Navy said earlier this month that the departure would be moved up because of the Pakistan disaster, which has claimed 1,600 lives and affected nearly 20 million.
The Kearsarge sailors and Marines are expected to be away at least seven months. After their work in Pakistan they'll continue on with their previously planned tour.
"We're going to help people, and I'm glad about that," said 2nd Class Petty Officer Bryan Draves, an aircraft electrician who was pierside Friday morning, hugging his wife as he prepared to step aboard. "But it's tough having to leave early and maybe be gone even longer than we thought."
Added his wife, Jordan Maynard, "This is his first deployment since we've been married. I'm not expecting it to be easy."
Supporting the Kearsarge group are Amphibious Squadron 4, Naval Beach Group 2, Tactical Air Control Squadron 21, Fleet Surgical Team 6 and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 22.

I am proud of each and everyone that left in this deployment
My husband HM3 Ortiz is on the Kearsarge and this is our second deployment the first time he was in Afghanistan for 15 months and now this. They left 1 month early than they were suppose to and it got me by surprise. I can not understand how people can think like this I am talking about some of the comments that are posted here. We are making a big sacrifice we can not think about those things in moments like this. I pray for all of them every second because no matter what they are doing this for all of us including you and your family. I think if you don't have nothing good to write here don't write anything at all, there is people that are really suffering for their love ones, we need moral support not negative comments. I love and miss my husband and I am proud of him and proud of everything that he is doing.
Proud Navy Wife
Nashville
Did our President EVER go to Nashville when it flooded? Nope
Did our President send the Navy and/or Marines to help Nashville? Nope
WHY are we always helping others before we help our own? Charity begins at home....time for us to help our own and let others help themselves - especially when those others hate us and want us destroyed.
Tired of our tax dollars going elsewhere.
NOVEMBER 2010 and 2012 - Change is coming!
Hiw many thousands bdied in Nashville, how many displaced
Scope is the operative word here. I doubt if the US would have sent help if nobody had perished, if less than a thousand displaced. Lets not forget the necessity to convince the Muslims that we are not anti Al-Qudada not anti Muslim.
sail quickly and safely sailors
When the Christmas 9.0 earthquake devasted Indonesia (the most populated Muslim country) President Bush responded by sending a task force. It took a week to get there.
So sad that President Bush was criticized for taking so long And those that did just showed how incompetent they are of reality - it takes travel time, time to gather the sailors, time to load the supplies). I am glad that President Obama is not being criticized for taking so long to deliver the aid and the face of Americans helping.
He is not being critised becaue US aid is already onsite.
The Kersage group is in addition to not the start.
Amazing how much aid we send
Amazing how much aid we send to foreign nations, regardless of their political, ethnic, religions, or cultural backgrounds... and we've been doing this for decades. Nobody really recognizes it. In fact, the world has come to expect it. We're now criticized when we don't respond quickly to the latest natural disaster. I think soon we need to re-think this policy. Sometimes our aid doesn't help, it simply creates dependents. Sometimes the best aid we can deliver is to encourage self-reliance by setting an example.
you got that right!
i agree with you
maybe it sounds mean and uncharitable, but these same people that take our aid hate us all over the world.so why arent all the muslim countries flooding pakistan with aid?because they are all hypocrites, thats why.
america needs to cut all foreign aid in half, right now! our hard earned paychecks are paying for all this free money we are handing out to these ungrateful nations.we have people here that are having rought times at home ,and here we are spewing out billions of dollars in aid to nations that spit in our face.when will we get leaders WHO HAVE THE GUTS TO SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH?!!
the last place i want my tax dollars to go to is to these muslim nations who would just as soon see our country fall to ashes,a la 9/11.
This is what happens when
This is what happens when you elect a MUSLIM president...
