North Carolina reports cases of rare horse disease

Posted to: News North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C.

North Carolina is the latest state to report cases of an animal disease the U.S. was free of for 20 years.

Tests of blood samples submitted to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, confirmed the presence of equine piroplasmosis in 11 horses in four locations.

North Carolina joins 19 other states to identify the illness.

State veterinary authorities immediately quarantined the places where the horses were found and said the animals could not be moved.

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is looking for the source of the disease and whether it has spread beyond where it was initially found.

With the exception of the quarantined premises, there are no EP-related movement restrictions on horses within North Carolina or between North Carolina and other states.
