It's hard to miss him. Joel Osteen's smiling face lines shelves at every bookstore. His televised sermons from Houston are viewed weekly by 7 million Americans, a good chunk of those right here in Hampton Roads.
Locals will have a chance to see Osteen in person as he brings his national "A Night of Hope" tour to Scope on Friday and hosts book signings this week in Chesapeake and Norfolk. His wife, Victoria, will appear with him.
"We've always had good support and praise in Norfolk," Joel Osteen said during a recent phone interview. "We're looking forward to being there."
Osteen, 47, is known for his gospel of hope and inspiration; that God wants people to have successful lives - in health, relationships and finances. It's the backbone of a tour that began in 2004 and has continued with one national stop each month and one or two overseas visits.
Osteen said he never expected his appearances to be so popular. In April, more than 45,000 filled Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
Osteen said people need a message of hope, and that's what prompted him to write his latest book, "It's Your Time." Released in November, it hit the New York Times best-seller list.
"I wrote that because, with the economy and so much going on, I wanted to let people know that God doesn't want us to be just in survival mode, just hoping to survive," Osteen said in his signature Texas twang. "I believe that God can bless us, even in the desert."
Osteen's appeal and popularity are hard to ignore. He comes across as an aw-shucks kind of guy, the child of a preacher who wanted his son to follow him into the pulpit, though the son didn't want to.
Osteen studied radio and television communications at Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma and started his father's television ministry in 1982. He gave in to his father's wishes and preached his first sermon in January 1999. His father died days later.
Lakewood Church now pulls in more than 40,000 for its weekly services and is housed in the former Houston Rockets basketball arena. Osteen's free audio podcast is downloaded nearly 4 million times each month. His most popular books, "Your Best Life Now" and "Become a Better You," also were best-sellers.
Regent University President Carlos Campo said Osteen has a multifaceted appeal that includes his look - trim and tall, with glossy dark hair and an easy smile - and his manner.
"People feel that he's nonthreatening," Campo said. "He's certainly tapping into something in America. While one might be critical of him, one must pay attention to his tapping into a need, an interest... from my perspective, that keeps him popular. He takes an approach that's open, that's hopeful."
Osteen's sermons have drawn flak from those who criticize him for being more of a motivational speaker than a theologian and for not using enough scripture in his preaching. He's also been accused of smiling too much. Osteen often is called a "prosperity preacher" because he believes that God's blessings can include eternal salvation as well as financial rewards while here on earth.
Osteen rejects that label. He doesn't ask for money on television, he said, and his critics define prosperity too narrowly.
"The way I think about prosperity is that God wants you to be happy. He wants you to be healthy. He wants you to be able to send your children to college," he said. "Prosperity is not just about money. I do believe God wants to bless us so that we can be a blessing to others."
Osteen will be coming to the area as it's still dealing with the recent news of the closing of the Joint Forces Command, which could mean the loss of thousands of jobs.
He'll have a special message, he said.
"You know that God has you in the palm of his hand, and you have to stay in a place of trust. You can't manipulate the situation," he said. "We're going to believe that this doesn't happen, but if it does, you must think, I truly believe, that God has a better plan. And that God will give you the strength to make it through."

free gospel
I am not a fan of J. Osteen simply because he doesn't spend time on salvation, but, I don't wish him the unkind things some of you are saying. When you jest against God's people, you jest against God and, who am I to say that God didn't call Joel for "such a time as this"?
Also, when I use to travel and sing gospel music I never charged, but, asked a donation to the ministry. In all of those years I NEVER pulled into a gas station and expected free gas because I was a gospel singer and gave free concerts. I had expenses and was expected to pay them.
The Scope isn't cheap I'm sure. Besides, some of these concerts that your kids go to cost much, much more than any $15 dollars. That doesn't seem to stop you from buying them for the kids. I see kids wearing clothes and carrying IPODS that I can't afford so I do without an ipod and shop for clothes on sale. If you don't agree with him, don't go. Simply as that. But, talking about something you know nothing about is just making you worse than what you call him. Sorry for your hard hearts.
Wait for it.
Wait for it....... Something along the lines of Ted Haggard. His wife is a beautiful women.
Hope
Mostly he hopes you will come give him money.
I Can't Stop Laughing!
This is really funny. Some guy pops up in town, charges $15 for something you can get for free, and then leaves you filled with false expectations.
This guy is a modern day Reverend Ike.
Where, oh where?
Where have they all gone? Jimmy and Tammy? Oral? Billy? Doesn't the message read something like "Render unto Caesar"? (tax reference, which they don't pay)? Watching these wealthy preachers, (as opposed to actual pastors) brings back memories of the "PTL (Pass the Loot)" program.
People wearing shoes they are NEVER meant to wear
Oh my look at all the people wearing shoes they're NEVER meant to wear. Just because Joel Osteen is different, doesn't give ANY OF YOU the right to judge him. Just because he takes out "thee" and "thou", you all are basically calling him names. Just because he felt that he needed to put things in terms that modern people can understand, you call him a thief(basically). Shame on all of you. Good grief, he's never even been to seminary and just wanted to bring the word of God into the lives of many in a way that they would understand. And you think he's the only one that prays for money?!?!? If you do, then you have been in a proverbial cave way too long. I find Joel very refreshing. What he says is more understandable and applicable to today's "lingo". Gone are the ways of the red faced preacher about to stroke out screaming about thee thou holy smite you blah blah blah. Oh and one more thing. Unless it impacts YOUR daily life (which it doesn't), don't get on your high holy horse and start judging, remember THAT'S NOT YOUR JOB!
Not a Fan
While I'm not a fan of Osteen himself and won't be paying the money to see him... I understand where you are coming from in the fact that he is certainly refreshing in style and easy to understand. Everyone is certainly going to like different things - many people even fashion the mega church style.
What I dislike most about Joel Osteen is that this is a man that is teaching basic theology to thousands upon thousands of people without having any education in the matter. You said that he's never been to seminary and just wanted to bring the word of God into people's lives. That's fabulous that he had a passion to do that, but he should have gotten educated before teaching the masses - anyone who is passionate about something longs to learn and be educated as much as they can in that subject area. Teachers can't even teach simple math to kindergardeners without a having a degree anymore. Crowds follow him and he's never been schooled in the history and teachings of the scriptures. Essentially he's pretty uneducated and doesn't frequent scripture to back up his teachings. In turn, people fault him for a lot of things - not just being a money man.
- Just saying.
You have a point
He didn't go to college and get a degree in theology, but so what? He didn't learn the intricate ways to twist what someone wrote, scratch that, several people wrote hundreds of years AFTER the death of some guy that may have lived at one point in time? Let's not talk about the fights that took place to decide what actually got published in the bible out of the many "books" that were supposedly written. I don't buy in to any of what religion has to offer as I believe I see the real truth behind all of it. But, what I do respect about Joel is he seems to be up front about why he's doing what he does. A little different than the tax free buildings all over the city filled with people who are just full of opinions and judge people unfairly JUST because they don't believe like they do.
A fool and his money
rather than put $15 in the pocket of these snake oil salesmen I'd rather you donate it to charity or put in the plate on Sunday morning. What they are selling is as far from Christianity as mud wrestling is from ballet. Check your wallet at the door.
