Popular beach-access sites reopen on Hatteras

Posted to: Environment News Spotlight Visitors North Carolina

HATTERAS ISLAND

The superintendent of Cape Hatteras National Seashore announced today the reopening of two popular off-road vehicle and pedestrian access sites.

The shoreline access corridor on Bodie Island Spit south of ramp 4 to Oregon Inlet is now open to pedestrians and vehicles. Also opened today to vehicle and pedestrian use was a section of beach between ramp 23 and the southern boundary of Salvo.

The superintendent has the authority to close parts of the beach to protect nesting shorebirds and turtles. This year's nesting season is coming to a close.

Closures that remain in place are marked with signs and symbolic fencing.

Driving is prohibited on all beaches within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
