A Liberty University professor and her son were killed early Sunday in a vehicle crash in Roanoke County.

Jill Jones, 41, and Nicholas Jones, 16, died when their vehicle was struck by an SUV driven by a Roanoke man at 12:30 a.m., according to Roanoke County police.

The Joneses died at the scene. Jones was an education professor at Liberty in Lynchburg.

Police said Harris was traveling westbound on Challenger Avenue at a high speed when his SUV ran a red light at the intersection with Cloverdale Road. The SUV struck two vehicles that both were turning left from Cloverdale Road onto eastbound Challenger Avenue.

Melanie Rice, 42, of Montvale, was driving the second vehicle. She was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and was in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman Allie Buth said.

Harris and his passenger, Melissa Harris, were taken to a local hospital, according to a news release from Roanoke County police. Buth said she had no information on Paul and Melissa Harris.

Police said in the news release that the SUV driver could have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. Charges are pending further investigation.
