Backstage with ... Micah Watson Band

Base of operations  Atlanta

Style of music  Pop-rock with worship theme

Bio  Singer/songwriter and  guitarist Micah Watson started the band with bassist Joe Blount of Newport News while working at Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton. “The guys that played with me when we first formed as a band were all part of the Sunday morning worship team,” he said.

That was six years ago. Since then the lineup has changed.  In March, Watson moved to Atlanta.

Joining Watson and Blount on a 10-day tour that will make a stop in Newport News are Atlanta-based guitarist Patty O’Malley,  Charlotte-based drummer Dominique Geralds and keyboardist Scott Spruill,  a childhood friend of Watson .

With production help from vocalist Mac Powell of the nationally known Christian band Third Day, the Micah Watson Band released “Daughters & Sons,” an 11-song CD, in May. “I’ve known Mac for about 10 years now,” Watson said. “I was in a band in Nashville, and I met him through that band. I just stayed in touch with him through the years, and I let him hear some stuff that the band had demoed last year, and he really liked them.”

Quote  “For the 'Daughters & Sons’ project, we’re giving away all the profits from that CD to a boys’ home in India. … The band is putting together a trip to Mumbai, India, that will happen next spring.  We will go back to this village where they are building this boys’ home.  We will hopefully be able to participate with construction efforts.”

If you go  6 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, 12716 Warwick Blvd., Newport News
