Old Dominion baseball coach Jerry Meyers is expected to resign his position with the Monarchs this week to return to South Carolina as the Gamecocks' pitching coach.
Meyers is 167-158 with ODU and was the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year, but failed to lead the Monarchs to the NCAA tournament in his six seasons. They finished 24-30 this past season.
Multiple reports out of South Carolina indicate Meyers will be introduced in Columbia, S.C., early this week. Meyers did not return calls Sunday and ODU officials would not confirm the move.
Meyers was the pitching coach at South Carolina for three consecutive trips to the College World Series from 2002 to 2004.
The position at South Carolina became vacant when Mark Calvi left following the school's national championship season to become the head-coach-in-waiting at South Alabama. Calvi will serve as an assistant at South Alabama next season before taking over.
Replacing Meyers would mark the first big hire made by new ODU athletic director Wood Selig. A likely candidate would be Western Kentucky coach Chris Finwood, a Hampton High graduate who has led the Hilltoppers to consecutive NCAA tournament trips. Finwood was hired by Selig at WKU after assistant coaching stints at VMI, VCU and Auburn. Finwood is a graduate of VMI.
Also expected to be in the running is VCU coach Paul Keyes, an ODU alumnus and Newport News native.

Quatraro
I agree with RIP21. Quatraro would be a perfect choice to get the program back on track. He has proven himself in the Tampa Bay orginization and is very well respected. He was also an Academic All-American at ODU.
who to hire
Don't hire either of these guys, bring back Matt Quatraro, former 3 time leauge mvp, coached the devil rays single A team, in ODU hall of fame and would get the alumni involved. Quality individual who will be able to recruit and raise money. It's a no brainer
Go With Keyes
Go with the alumn. Paul Keyes knows the program both as a player, an opposing coach and a local. Do the right thing.
