VIRGINIA BEACH
The first forum of the 2nd Congressional District election involved questions about war, taxes, veterans and the economy - and verbal attacks on the incumbent, U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye.
Before an overflow crowd of more than 500 Thursday night in the Princess Anne High School auditorium, the two challengers who hope to unseat the Virginia Beach Democrat took shots at his vote on a multibillion-dollar stimulus bill last year, while Nye stressed his efforts to help the military.
"When I first got into Congress, we were in the worst economic crisis we had ever seen," Nye said, explaining why he voted for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Nye noted that he did not vote for other stimulus bills.
Republican Scott Rigell said, "I'm not at all surprised that Congressman Nye got off that question as quickly as he could. He voted for the bill."
Rigell said he opposed all the stimulus bills. Companies have to be able to weather market forces and the changing economy without government assistance, he said.
"Either we believe in the free market or we don't," he said.
Kenny Golden, a former Republican running as an independent, argued that the best way to stimulate the economy was to replace the federal income tax with a double-digit national sales tax - called the fair tax by it s supporters.
The 2nd Congressional District includes all of Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore and parts of Norfolk and Hampton.
When asked about the health care legislation approved earlier this year, Nye noted that he voted against it "because it cost too much."
Nye, who didn't announce how he would vote on the health care bill until the night before the House vote, said he took time to read every section of the massive bill before deciding.
Rigell claimed Nye delayed taking a stand because he waited to see whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi had enough votes to pass it without his support.
"Clarity comes to Congressman Nye when clarity comes to Speaker Pelosi on the vote count," he said.
Nye, who didn't criticize either opponent during the 90-minute forum, said his health care decision wasn't complicated: He studied the bill and voted no.
When asked about the war in Afghanistan, the three were supportive of American efforts but offered slightly contrasting views.
"This is a fight we have to win," Nye said. "We were attacked by terrorists who were based and planned that attack out of Afghanistan. The key to success" is getting Afghan soldiers sufficiently trained to defend their own country.
"It's a tough situation," said Golden, who argued that it's just as crucial to continue to assist Pakistan to prevent the Taliban from rising to power. "The heart of darkness in that area is the Taliban."
Rigell said he has felt since nine years ago, after the United States was attacked, that Congress should have declared war before entering Iraq and Afghanistan.
"I'm not a warmonger, but I believe if America goes to war, we go with overwhelming force," Rigell said.
On the subject of illegal immigration, all want to ramp up enforcement along U.S. borders, but none said what should be done about the illegal immigrants already inside the country.
"Seventeen percent of them are bad people," Golden said, referring to illegal immigrants. "They're terrorists. We need to close the border and fix the problem."
Nye said he supported spending more money on border patrol officers. "We need to seal the borders first."
Rigell said he opposed the Obama administration's legal challenge to Arizona's laws aimed at cracking down on illegal immigrants. He also said he wants stronger penalties against businesses that knowingly hire illegal workers.

Hope and Change Vapors
Nye like Warner & Webb rode in on the "Hope & Change" vapors being pumped out by Obambi. Remember hope & change are both empty words.
Yikes!
I attended this debate. Congressman Nye's only replies were, I listen to my constituents and vote the way they want me to - and, I voted against health care. How boring. I wanted to fall asleep when he spoke. He never replied to what the other candidates accused him of and when the debate was over - the others stayed for a long time to talk with citizens, but I saw Nye run out of the door and jump into a Prius with an Obama Bumper Sticker! Nye has been so distant that he is almost invisible!
Rigell on the other hand is out having 4 Town Hall meetings where he will answer any question. I went to his first one on Monday in Hampton. I was undecided when I went there, but walked out a Rigell supporter!!!!!
So.. I take it you caught
So.. I take it you caught him explaining his financial support for Barack Obama for America? He wrote a one thousand dollar check to Barack Obama for America. Here is yet another video of someone asking that question http://www.youtube.com/user/Virginia2RawFootage#p/u/2/XIgJvup4KgI
Rigell is the Leadership We Need
The debate made it clear that Scott Rigell is the leader we desperately need in congress. His enthusiasm and common sense, level headed conservatism came through clearly. To correct the article, Nye DID vote for further stimuluses: the recent $26 billiion state supplemental. This shows that he didn't learn his lesson from the original failed stimulus.
Vote for Nye
I attended the debate the past Thursday. It was great to see a big crowd of voters show up. Nye is in a good position to repeat in November. I did not see reason from other candidates to change leadership in the 2nd District. Some of the comments from Nye's competition were not believable.
Hilarious
Clearly, the Rigell campaign is doing something right. Nye is water boy for Pelosi and Obama. Kenny didn't get any support from his former party so he left to run another poor campaign as an independent.
I liked Rigell's answer on illegal immigrations. And thank you, Rigell for calling out Nye for his health care vote. If Pelosi didn't have the votes she needed, Nye would have voted for that bill in a heartbeat. Nye and his staff, who look bored as hell, better start packing their bags.
Something has to change
Nye isn't cutting it. The longer he stays in the worse it gets. Simple as that. Rigell has pointed out plenty of mistakes Nye has made and continues to hide behind them. Pelosi is just icing on the cake. Rigell will change the way things are done.
A VOTE FOR NYE IS A VOTE FOR PELOSI
It's true, a Vote for Nye is a Vote for Pelosi. Is he a nice guy? Yes he is. But 1) He votes with Pelosi roughly 85% of the time and 2)His first vote in the last Congress was to make her Speaker and presumably his first vote in the next Congress would be to keep her as Speaker.
I don't think this country can literally afford another 2 years of Speaker Pelosi. After all, we've added $3 Trillion to the national debt in just 18 months.
One of the best lines the Pilot captured of the evening was when Scott Rigell said "we either believe in the Free Market or we Don't." Spoken like a businessman!
Liberal Slant? Not by the photo used.
Take a look at the picture used for this story in the paper (article). Nye looks dramatically half the size of the other two candidates and is in the back. It almost looks like Photoshop was used to make him appear that small; his dimensions look off compared to the other two in the photo. Another subtlety is that Rigell is on his right on the stage and Nye is on his left.
