Suspicious fires lit at seven Va. Beach homes

Posted to: Crime News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

It was a quiet Sunday night in the city's Brigadoon subdivision when Tabitha Nichols heard frantic knocking at her front door.

When she answered, she found a neighbor and her two children standing on the front lawn. Their home, across the street at 5216 Brockie St., was in flames.

The blaze was one of seven suspicious fires reported throughout Brigadoon between about 10 and 10:30 p.m. Sunday, said Battalion Chief Michael Barakey, a Fire Department spokesman. In all but one case, someone lit rubbish or the contents of a trash can or recycling bin on fire. In one case, a flag hanging outside a garage was torched. Scraps of red-and-white fabric remained, but it's unclear whether it was an American flag.

Damage for all seven fires totals roughly $68,230, according to police reports filed online and estimates from the Fire Department.

The home at 5216 Brockie St. suffered the most extensive damage, totaling about $65,000, Barakey said. It's no longer habitable. Four other homes also suffered minor exterior damage. One person was injured with first- and second-degree burns to the chest while trying to pull a burning bin away from his home at 5140 Brockie St., Capt. Terrence Tassone said.

Fire investigators aren't sure who started the fires or why. They scoured the neighborhood Monday, examining melted recycling bins and charred houses and interviewing residents. But as of 8 a.m. today, investigators didn’t have a suspect or any new leads, Barakey said.

"If it was a prank, they underestimated themselves," said Tassone, a deputy fire marshal who's working the investigation. "It's very serious when you're lighting a trash can on fire that is up against an occupied dwelling at night."

An 8-year-old boy was asleep in a bedroom above where the fire started at 5216 Brockie St., investigators said. Setting fire to an occupied dwelling is a Class 3 felony punishable by five to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

It doesn't appear fuel was used in any of the fires, but it would've been easy to ignite the contents of the receptacles using matches or a lighter, Tassone said. Investigators said it's too soon to speculate whether the incidents may have been a teen prank, but they have said juvenile arsons tend to spike during the summer.

Last year, police arrested 17 adults and 11 juveniles for setting fires.

The family at 5216 Brockie St. had moved in about a week before the fire, Nichols said. She said they're a Navy family and had just unpacked their last box.

"School is starting soon, and now she has no place to live," Nichols said. "It's terrifying. I don't want to put my trash can out.... You can't display a flag because you're afraid that it's gonna get put on fire."

For now, Nichols and her neighbors have taken down their flags and moved their trash cans inside.

"It's scary," Brigadoon resident Shannan Robert said. "They didn't realize you can kill someone."

Four of the fires occurred on Brockie Street, and one each took place on Lola Drive, MacQueen Drive and Albright Drive, Barakey said.

The Fire Department is asking that anyone with information about the arsons call Fire Investigator Don A. Moss at (757) 385-1775. They can also call (757) 385-4228 and ask for Fire Investigations or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Solvers at (888) LOCK-U-UP (562-5887).

Brigadoon Fires

How true when we say that parents are NOT watching over kids in this area. I see them a the park and canal areas throwing rocks at wildlife. I see them gathering in gangs roaming around the Lynnhaven Parkway and Indian Road areas. Setting fires contains so much more danger in that now the deaths of someone could have occurred. I think that the police do need to readjust their thinking and pay more attention to patroling neighborhoods. Parents too need to take responsbility..."do you know where your child is?"

I wonder ???

First off, I'm glad to hear everyone got out alive!!

But I can't help but wonder if any of these houses are in jeopordy of foreclosure?

I could be watching too much t.v., but I'm just saying. CSI might want to look into it.

.

i dont believe these houses are in forclosure. Being the neighbor of the house that had the most damange. They just moved in last weekend as renters so they have nothing to gain.

bored teenagers

Sadly this is the result of kids w/ no imagination and nothing to do. But I had to LAUGH @ the poster who wrote " va bch police need to get there QUICK when a security alarm goes off".

Can you say False Alarm ?

If VAB Police responded to EVERY Alarm ? You'd have citizens being run over in the streets from ALL the Police cars speeding from one alarm to another.

"Scraps of red-and-white

"Scraps of red-and-white fabric remained, but it's unclear whether it was an American flag"

I'm not sure where Kathy was going with this but this sentence makes me laugh.

I see ADT moving in soon..

I see ADT is going to target this area for a marketing profit. Every home should put a sign in their yard..."Property monitored by Video Surveillance" and these thugs setting these fires will get caught. About (2) out of (5) homeowner's will follow through with this and if you notice...homes that have high-tech security systems installed have less than 1% of getting broken into, etc. Nobody wants to take a chance (or risk) getting caught and when you let your guard down...this is what happens. Kids don't know the meaning of "pranks" they take it TOO FAR. VB Police need to be MORE vigilant when they hear a security alarm going off and GET THERE! My neighbors house had a "false alarm" and it took over an HOUR for them to get there (after we called the neighbors at work to let them know their alarm was going off. VERY poor example by VB Police on "oh, we'll get to it when we can." attitude. IF they are juveniles...(and they'll get caught)...make their PARENTS pay for the damages and we'll see how "funny" they think it is. Lack of Parental control is what starts this mess!

Spoken like a true ADT

Spoken like a true ADT salesperson.

Opportunity knocks!

Find the criminals & punish them...AND....

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. There really needs to be MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more police surveillance ON A REGULAR BASIS throughout the Brigadoon area. In addition to these arson crimes, there is a great deal of gang and other criminal activity going on that needs to be caught by our law enforcement. I know police precincts would rather catch speeders near Kempsville Middle School, but it's time to move beyond the speeders on Churchill Dr. and start monitoring the growing gang activitiy, vandalism and other criminal activities that are increasing in the Kempsville area. The criminals know that there is always a police officer sitting in the parking lot of Kempsvill Middle School, and the criminals know that officers are nowhere to be found in the neighborhoods throughout Kempsville. It's time for police to start driving through neighborhoods FREQUENTLY!

It's time to find those bored kids something to do

Hard labor in jail should make them appreciate their free time.

Serious Time

I'm betting 2 or 3 kids.

7 counts, 5 years per count is 35 years minimum. Hey that's a lot of time to play Housewife to Bubba and his friends.

Now, ask yourselves, do you trust the others with you last night not to give you up in a deal with the DA?
