As part of National Child Passenger Safety Week, the Police Department will offer free safety seat checks on Saturday.
The checks will be done from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lowe’s at 1904 Virginia Beach Blvd., police wrote in a news release.
Certified technicians will check and install seats. Parents who wonder if their child’s seat is out of date or has been recalled also are invited to the event.
About 85 percent of all child safety seats are not installed properly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In Virginia, all children under age 8 must be restrained in a safety or booster seat, police warn in the release. Children age 8 to 17 must wear a seatbelt in the front and back seats.
For more information, visit the Virginia Department of Health website. For information about having a seat checked in another city, visit NHTSAs site.

Uh..... Get 'er done
I have been using child seats for my children and grandchildren since 1979 and I intend on going to have them take a look at my set-up. There is nothing "unmacho" about having an expert double check your equipment, especially when your loved ones are at risk. I can't be sure that I am up to date on all of the recalls so I will be there. If you mount a child safety seat or booster seat in your ride, you should attend. (Besides, it's an excuse to wander around in a hardware store on a Saturday afternoon!)
