Beneath the stained-glass window in a Baptist church sanctuary, the second debate between three men running for Congress got heated and a little personal Thursday night as they raised questions about one another's experience and campaign tactics.
Before several hundred people in Second Calvary Baptist Church, Republican candidate Scott Rigell said his opponent, U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, has failed as a leader. Nye failed to know in advance that Defense Secretary Robert Gates was quietly developing plans to close the Joint Forces Command until Gates made his plans known at an Aug. 9 news conference, Rigell said.
Nye, a Democrat, responded that Rigell was only trying to "score cheap political points" and criticized the Republican for airing television attack ads that served no purpose.
Meanwhile, Kenny Golden, an independent candidate, said Rigell should show more respect to Nye but also argued that both his opponents were wasting their time trying to save the command, known as JFCOM.
The three are competing on the Nov. 2 ballot to represent the 2nd Congressional District, which includes Virginia Beach, the Eastern Shore, and parts of Norfolk and Hampton.
When responding to a moderator's question about JFCOM, Rigell, owner of Freedom Automotive, said Nye's failure to know about Gates' plans show that he doesn't have strong enough ties to the officers at Norfolk Naval Station, where JFCOM is based. The station is located in the 2nd District.
Gates had said Aug. 9 - with no early warning to Virginia's congressional delegation - that he wanted to close JFCOM within a year and cut spending on defense support contractors by nearly one-third over three years.
Rigell said, "This was five months in the making and yet our freshman congressman... didn't see it coming."
Rigell said the lack of advance knowledge is poor reflection on Nye but not on another Republican, U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes, whose district includes a large JFCOM complex in Suffolk. Forbes didn't know about the impending shutdown, either.
Nye responded that he, the rest of Virginia's congressional delegation and Gov. Bob McDonnell were kept in the dark about Gates' announcement.
They all spoke out together Aug. 9, vowing to work together to oppose the secretary's plans, Nye said, noting that Rigell sent out a news release that day "declaring defeat just to score cheap political points."
Golden, a retired naval officer, said it was useless to talk about saving JFCOM.
"JFCOM is gone," he said, adding that the region's leaders need to come up with a plan to keep the vital parts of the command in the region.
When asked about campaign advertising, Nye was critical of Rigell for running a TV commercial attacking his record in Congress.
"I never saw one ad that solved a problem or got anything done," he said.
Rigell's television spots have pointed out that Nye's first vote in Congress was to elect U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi as House Speaker and that he also voted for the economic stimulus bill.
The Republican stood by his approach.
"Not all ideas are equal. Not all leaders are equal," Rigell said, adding he doesn't consider his spots attack ads if they are truthful.
Golden - who had been active in the Republican Party, including a stint as party chairman in Virginia Beach, before running as an independent - said there's a strong reason why such spots are used.
"Negative ads work," he said.

House Insurance
Great!!. House Insurance
NYE = PELOSI
The debate can be summed up in one sentence. The first vote congressman Nye will make if he is re-elected is to once again make Nancy Pelosi the speaker of the house. I don't know about you, but I can't afford another 2 years of her using China, our biggest competitor in about everything, as our country's credit card. Hire Rigell, Fire Pelosi!
Precognition?
"Scott Rigell said his opponent, U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, has failed as a leader. Nye failed to know in advance--"
Perhaps Rigell could explain how Nye could know this in advance of the announcement? Is he (Rigell) saying that he (again, Rigell) is capable of mindreading and soothsaying, something which has drawn fire as an illegal enterprise? Does he plan to perform the duties of delegate while using Tarot cards? Maybe a crystal ball? While I still think that Nye should have run as an independent, since he has said in his ads that he has SHOWN his independence, this attack by Rigell smacks of the ridiculous, and a stretch of any imagination. He should stick to selling cars.
Future debate rules
How about we make a new rule for debates. You can not mention you opponent in any way. I think we are more interested in what you think about the situations at hand and not how you think the other person handled it. Please tell the public what your ideas are, what your plans are, what your stand is on the issues. Help us make an informed choice. I don't care if you are a republican, democrat, or an independent.
Future debate rules
Another rule for debates is to actually DEBATE. So far there have been zero debates between the three candidates and forums the GOP candidate keep calling a debate do not facilitate observation of how each of these candidates might interact when arguments arise in congress. The GOP has a candidate that will not enter into a debate and people need ask why.
The comment
The comment:We've seen how successful the $800 Billion "stimulus" bill has been!" shows what a utter lack of intelligence of economics. The stimulus bill did in fact save the car industry and many business's from a total collapse.Home improvement companies, electronic companies, manufacturers and suppliers all were able to keep from going into total bankruptcy and many of the programs greatly benefited the environment and resulted in a less fuel consumption. Unless you were living on another planet, the collapse of the economy came well before Obama took office. The Ship was sinking fast. The fact is, the ship is still afloat and slowly but surely recovering.
Scott Rigell is a liar and a hypocrite. He himself used the stimulus to keep his Business from going under. He in fact took $500,000 dollars from the program, and said himself that he had to use the money for his employees. The man is so full of Bs that it is disgusting to listen to his cheap ads, his cheap assaults that are just hot air and posturing.By the way, ask Scott how he was able to buy the car dealership. You may be in for a surprise. He did not start the business from scratch, but bought it with Daddy in law money.
Glenn Nye can't run from his record
The bottom line is Glenn Nye can't run from his record. He believes massive deficit spending is key to grow the economy. We've seen how successful the $800 Billion "stimulus" bill has been!
Nye clearly has a thin skin and can't handle it when people point out that he votes with Nancy Pelosi and voted to make her Speaker.
People seem to be upset that Scott Rigell is a successful businessman who has actually created jobs, balanced a budget and met a payroll. We need more private citizens from the private sector in Congress!
WOW! Is that all it takes?
"People seem to be upset that Scott Rigell is a successful businessman who has actually created jobs, balanced a budget and met a payroll. We need more private citizens from the private sector in Congress!"
We aren't upset he's a businessman, we're upset THAT'S ALL HE IS.
Those qualifications are LAUGHABLE!
There are THOUSANDS of people in VA that meet those.
You really need to come up with something better than that if you want people to vote for him. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Really? He can do payroll?
Really? He can do payroll? Wow...?
First of all, I highly doubt he did the payroll himself. Generally, that is not done by the owner of a company, the owner just signs the checks.
Second of all, he's not running for tax collector, he's running for Congressman. How does him being a "proven job creator" translate to Congress and legislating? Is he going to expand bureaucratic jobs?
thin skin like rigell's supporters?
Bryan does not seem to want to boast about Rigell willingly accepting stimulus money.
Republicans love socialist programs when they can get other peoples' money.
