CHESAPEAKE

Chesapeake police and law enforcement officers in North Carolina will be stopping drivers today on U.S. 17 at the state line.

The annual enforcement Border to Border checkpoint is part of the multistate Checkpoint Strikeforce safety campaign, according to a news release from Chesapeake police. Officers will be looking for violations and impaired drivers.

Thirteen people died on Virginia roads during the 2009 Labor Day weekend, up from seven in 2008, according to Chesapeake police.

Law enforcement officers will be checking vehicles on the North Carolina side of the border and at the borders with Maryland, Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee.

just to let everyone know

Virginia is not a proof of insurance state. I wish it was but it's not. So you don't need to show the police your insurance papers.

oops

that should be if you ARE carrying your license and insurance and are not carrying illegal drugs. etc.

checkpoint

What in the world is the big deal? You slow down, you hand the cop what he asked for and whoopee, your on your way. No harm, no fowl. That is, if you aren't drunk, aren't carrying your license and insurance, etc.
O yea, and if you try to get your chapstick out and flip your pouch of drugs into the cops hands. (Paris Hilton) Some people just want to complain about everything and anything. Nothing satisfies them no matter what is done. I appreciate the effort to keep us safer on the roads since so many who disobey the law don't seem to care and act "stupidly" when behind the wheel. If you have nothing to hide, then, there is no reason to complain. Have a nice day and drive carefully and soberly. OK bring on the disagreeable thumbs down. I can hardly wait.

Good!

If the checkpoints get just one drunk driver off the road so they don't hurt or kill anyone, they will have paid for themselves. Those who don't like the checkpoints probably don't have a problem with people having the 'freedom' to drive drunk either.

dws

driving while stupid (DWS). Strange most accidents happen during times when drunks are not onthe road ways. We advertize the hell out of dui and seat belts but nothing about using turn signals, yield right away, texting , etc.. DUI gets front page news but the same accident with dws gets oh hum. I firmly believe the dui people and dws are one in the same just driving a 2 pm instead of 2 am seems the only difference

police state

i think that unwarranted stopping of motorists is an infringement on our rights as citizens.it has all the markings of a totalitarian police state.
it sucks!!!

BORDER / HIGHWAY / STREET CHECKPOINTS

I don't like these because they remind me of when I was stationed in Germany and had to drive to/from West Berlin through all the Communist checkpoints. Same thing. Bad memories!

I understand what you are saying, but it isn't the same at all. It is for your own safe passage on the road.

Why slow the evacuation route?

Really, doing that today?

Thats really common. These people are trying to flee the storm and get thier families to safety. You're gonna make traffic rediculous on that road. Choose another day and take everyone's money then.

Unconstitutional and Unwise during evac

I have never agreed with 'safety checks'; they are unconstitutional. Why is it an officer has to have 'probable cause' to pull you over (coming from behind you) but can stop you for no reason when he/she is in front of you at a 'check point'? Where is the probable cause in that? It's random and often biased.

And all those poor people trying to leave due to a mandatory evacuation. As if they are not facing enough of a challenge getting out of Dodge. They have to contend with forces of Nature AND forces of Man; how ridiculous is that? Boo!!!!
