Cupcakes on a roll in Norfolk

Posted to: Food Business Life

In Norfolk, you can have your cupcake, and eat a different one, too.

Carolina Cupcakery, the Chesapeake bakery that specializes in single small cakes in a variety of exotic flavors, plans to open its second shop on Colley Avenue in Ghent.

Just Cupcakes, the Virginia Beach bakery that focuses on the same petite delicacies, also wants to come to Norfolk, specifically downtown by early next year, said owner Carla Hesseltine. She has yet to find the ideal spot, but sells some at Bean There Cafe on City Hall Avenue.

"We're going to offer delivery this fall to Norfolk for free," Hesseltine added.

The Cupcakery set up a temporary kiosk at MacArthur Center downtown for Valentine's Day and has operated a booth since April at Five Points Community Farm Market on Church Street, which helped gain a Norfolk following, owner Dawn Eskins said.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with competition," Eskins said of Just Cupcakes.

"This is a big area," Hesseltine agreed, "and there's room for lots of cupcakes."
