Some of the dogs from the research lab in Gates County, N.C., where federal investigators are looking into animal abuse allegations started to arrive at the Norfolk and Virginia Beach SPCAs on Friday.
The dogs will be up for adoption.
“We will place these dogs, I feel pretty confident,” said Sharon Adams, executive director of the Virginia Beach SPCA.
Norfolk’s SPCA was expected to pick up more than 30 beagles, said Jeff Roberts, chief executive officer. Employees will probably need to work with the dogs and examine them before they are placed for adoption, he said. It was not immediately clear how many dogs would go to Virginia Beach.
Federal officials are trying to find homes for more than 200 animals that were at Professional Laboratory and Research Services Inc.
A U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesman said it was the company's decision to give them up and stop research. The USDA inspected the site this week and has started a formal investigation after Norfolk-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released videos showing what PETA claims are lab workers violating the law.

It has been reported
It has been reported elsewhere that the president of this lab, Helen Sonenshine, was disgusted and appalled after viewing PETA’s video.
Is she the same Helen Sonenshine whose husband is a professor emeritus at Old Dominion University and a renowned expert on ticks?

I would be very interested in knowing if the owners of this lab ever owned a contract research lab previously -- especially if it was forced to close due to similar allegations.
RESEARCH CENTER ABUSED DOGS
Each and every one of these workers that contributed to the abuse of these innocent animals should do time for their actions. I hope they read these comments concerning this. Let's hope you never have to be placed in a nursing home or rehab center and receive that kind of care. It hurts. They feel such physical pain. SHAME ON YOU ALL--

Finally......
Peta does something worthwhile. If they did more things like this, and quit picking on fisherman etc, people would stop making fun of them.
Good job.
It's extremely unusual for me to make a positive statement about PETA (People Embarrassing the Tidewater Area). So here goes - Nice job, PETA. I don't know how you got the intel, but apparently it was spot on.
For nosoupforyou: You must be the dog Nazi, as well as the soup Nazi. I'm pretty sure these dogs aren't sure which state they are citizens of, and will be happy to escape the hell hole they were in. Lighten up, dude....
Sad Story
However, animals from N.C. should stay in that state and be cared for there. Local shelters are already under funded, short on staff and over crowded with pets from area residents.
sad story happy (?) ending
If help is needed we go. If North Carolina can't do the job, we will do it. Yes, the Norfolk SPCA is grossly underfunded, that is because they receive no funds. They depend on the generosity of the public and grants. If you feel they are under funded, and short on staff, open your wallet and help. If you feel that they are understaffed, how about volunteering. You would be more that welcome and you will be doing a wonderful mitzver.
I think PETA may have done some real good on this one.
The evening televised news would not show the filmed evidence. If I got this right, it was for ethical reasons.
