Hancock withdraws from Portsmouth mayor's race

Posted to: Elections News Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH

Terry Hancock Sr. is withdrawing from the mayor's race, reducing the field to seven candidates.

Hancock, 49, said Friday that he is throwing his support behind Lee Cherry because they share many of the same views and Cherry has a better chance of winning.

Hancock, a political newcomer who owns a driving instruction school, said he was "a little naive" about the challenge of running for mayor. He reported one contribution for $300 and about $1,745 in expenditures in his first campaign finance report.

"I just knew I didn't like the direction Portsmouth was going in and that I wanted to try to do something about it, as opposed to just complain," he said.

Ballots have been printed with Hancock's name, but once he formally submits his resignation, notices that he has withdrawn will be posted in voting booths and sent with absentee ballots.

The winner on Nov. 2 will fill out the last 20 months of former mayor James Holley's term. Holley was recalled this summer.

In addition to Cherry, the candidates are D. Stefan Adams Sr., Billy Baker, Mark Geduldig-Yatrofsky, Bill Moran, Councilwoman Elizabeth Psimas and Kenny Wright.

Mayor candidates and campaign managers

It's a matter of trust and being truthful. Bill Moody has told alot of people that this mayor's race is about the fourth vote on council and that's it. He has told alot of people! He hasn't explained his role in the recall of Mayor Holley who didn't deserve to be recalled. Bill sent an e-mail telling people to keep getting the petitions signed against Holley. He has worked very close with Delores Knight for years. Bob Marcus(Bob's Gun Shop) says two councilpeople came to him and asked him to become involved in the recall. Wonder who that was? Moody needs to say he wasn't involved in the recall and tell the truth about what is happening. Everyone in Portsmouth will know the truth if in January Bill Moody is given the job as undersheriff.

who dunit?

"the recall of Mayor Holley who didn't deserve to be recalled"

Who leaked Ms. Stoke's memo (to the City Clerk complaining about the Mayor) to the press?

the citizens deserve to know----

Was it someone on council, someone in the City Clerk's office?

Wasn't the memo a private personnel matter that should have remained confidential?

The media knows who it was,

this information would provide voters with insight during the upcoming election

Bill Moody be honest with Portsmouth citizens

Bill Moody, the citizens of Portsmouth have alot of unanswered questions you need to answer. You were the council person assigned to Cradock and the southside for years..Why didn't you do something about the flooding problem in Highland Biltmore? You are the person that sent the e-mail tellihg people to keep getting petitions signed regarding Mayor Holley's recall. You are the person who has been working very closely with Cradock's Delores Knight for years and you are the person that wanted to run for mayor...after all you got the popular vote! You are the person telling everyone this election is about that fourth vote on council and that's it... My question is who are you trying to get that fourth vote for? Should the citizens of Portsmouth trust you? Senator Louise Lucas has already cost the city of Portsmouth 98,000.00...Is that what this is all about? The people of Portsmouth deserve a mayor and city council that they can trust but I don't believe they can trust you anymore! You are selling a bad bill of goods!

costing the city (you know, us taxpayers)

"Senator Louise Lucas has already cost the city of Portsmouth 98,000.00..."

It could be said the city council cost the city $98,000

by voting down her proposal.

It's all in how you spin it-------
----------------------------------------------------------------

Whoever dropped a dime on the Mayor

by leaking the Stoke's memo to the press has cost the taxpayers much more than $98K

18 months of negative press and two special elections

I'm not sure how often we

I'm not sure how often we have agreed on issues....here I disagree....Im not convinced Moody is pushing fourth vote for self serving purposes.....Portsmouth HAS GOT TO unite.....we have to find some common ground and start building.

I swapped my support due to mudslinging...It really has reached a point now where its pathetic....you have some supporters trying to out decades old dismissed criminal charges.....dragging family and unfortunate financial situations into this race.

Funny....we have SEVERAL folks in senior positions who have filed bankruptcy...I don't think it disqualifies them or shows them to be poor with their fiduciary duties....some folks....like small business people (HINT HINT) take risks....make jobs and cross fingers.....It's what Americas about.....if you fail you reorganize and pull yourself up by the bootstraps.....but to bring family into it? its disrespectful and uncalled for......CHERRY 2010

I totally agree with you,

I totally agree with you, Larry Gump! Wait until you read today's article. I'm beyond disgusted! Psimas is at it, again.

Lee Cherry for Mayor!

Hancock went in the wrong direction

Mr. Scarecrow that's your opinion and I respect your right to express it. I am responding to your false assertion that I am supporting Mr. Cherry in order to get the fourth vote. I heard you and other Psimas supporters spead this like a manure spreader. Your assertion tells me that your knowledge of Portmouth's Council Manager form of government is woefully lacking. Portsmouth City Council is responsbile for the legislative function of the city and in Portsmouth's case it takes four votes to pass ordinances, appropriations, and establish policy. In some cases involving real estate it takes a super majority. The ability to get 4 votes depends on the issue. As an example let's take the vice mayor position. Your candidate Ms. Psimas has twice tried unsuccessfully to get 3 other members of council to support her becoming vice mayor. Did she do anyting wrong in trying to assemble 3 other votes? Absolutley not. That's the way our system works.

Elizabeth Psimas

Question: Is Elizabeth Psimas the right person for Mayor? I have personally experienced things about Ms. Psimas which have caused me to reconsider voting for her along with many others who have begun removing signs from their yards. Is it the Psimas supporters who are "spreading this like a manuere spreader" or Ms. Psimas herself directing them to do so?

I and others are concered Ms. Psimas will win. I'd like to know if there is good reason for the concern or not. If not, please let us know. We'd like a fair campaign for Mayor without mud slinging, however is some of the mud slinging justified?

Thank you

I have to agree here with

I have to agree here with you Mr. Moody.......this whole 4th vote issue and the Louise Lucas issue are distracters.....people who cant think of a positive point to campaign on and so instead choose the LOW road. It's easier to cry what the opponent can't do than to COME UP with legitimate, useful, interesting and thoughtful initiatives.

I like all the candidates.....but one keeps sliding forward....when you compare side by side
1. Total Time in Service to OUR city
2. Hours Volunteered to OUR city
3. Interest in the middle class
4. Who brings Realistic and Effective initiatives to the table
5. Ability to further Portsmouth's Financial,Quality of Life and Unity needs
6. History of being mainstream...sharing community goals and being responsive to those who are unable to protect themselves.

So often we see leaders at the state & Federal level selected due to service to our country....how about electing those who have put their life on the line at the LOCAL LEVEL for our families, property and quality of life?

The citizens will decide who's going to be the mayor !

Does Lee Cherry have a college degree? Let's talk honesty and integrity...Why is Lee's brother (the owner of Cherry Carpet) supporting Ms. Psimas for mayor? Portsmouth citizens want a mayor that will be responsible with their money! Has Lee Cherry been responsible with his own money? Has he ever filed for bankruptcy? Let's be honest with the citizens of Portsmouth! Ms. Psimas shares a vision for a brighter Portsmouth, busy with economic development to pay for services Portsmouth needs and deserves! She has 6 years experience on city council, she led the way with Ports. schools being fully accredited, a competitive pay plan for public safety employees, APM Terminal development, Victory Crossing, the new Portsmouth TCC Community College campus, a new Library in Churchland, two new schools, a new courthouse, national headquarters for APM and Massimo Zanatti, more investment in old infrastructure, reduced real estate tax rates, and an improved credit rating-all during this terrible economy. Vote Elizabeth Psimas for Mayor!
