Heavy issue: Light rail could make us lighter, study says

NORFOLK

If you're searching for reasons to hop aboard Norfolk's light rail when it opens next year, you might want to weigh this one: Riding it could make you lighter.

A study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine concluded that commuters in Charlotte, N.C., who take light rail are 6-1/2 pounds lighter than those who drive and have an 81 percent lower risk of becoming obese.

Researchers found that people burn more calories when they forgo their cars and walk to and from transit stations.

This unintended benefit of light rail is heavy stuff for transit operators.

"We may have to rethink our marketing strategies," joked James Toscano, Hampton Roads Transit spokesman.

"Light rail equals light weight" he said, playing off the phrase, "light rail equals heavy taxes" commonly used by rail opponents.

"As people slim down, our capacity to carry them grows," Toscano quipped. Light-rail vehicle capacity is measured in pounds, not persons.

But can light rail use really result in weight loss?

Fat chance, said David Swain, exercise science professor at Old Dominion University.

"We're not going to solve the obesity problem because we're putting in light rail," he said. "I don't see it as a weight-loss technique."

Conducted by the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and the RAND Corp., the study involves two surveys, one before the completion of Charlotte's light-rail line and another 12 to 18 months later, after LYNX opened in 2007. The survey asked about height, weight, levels of physical activity, public transit use before and after light-rail construction, and actual light-rail usage.

Results showed that those who use the system to commute to work reduced their body mass indexes by an average of 1.18 points, which is the equivalent of 6.45 pounds for a 5-foot-5 person.

The researchers said the results are plausible if those people walked an extra mile every workday as part of their commutes.

They wrote that their research suggests a link between use of light rail and "positive health outcomes" and that light-rail use "should be encouraged as a potential weight maintenance strategy along with other lifestyle benefits."

Swain, who is an associate editor for an exercise science journal, said he would not run the study in his publication because he found the methodology questionable.

To lose a third of a pound a week, he said, the average person would have to walk an extra 20 miles a week (four miles each workday) while not changing any eating habits or other physical behaviors.

The added exercise could make people hungrier.

"Maybe we would find that light-rail users increase their caloric intake due to snacks they have while on the train, or snacks they have when they get to their office," he said. "So, I'm a bit doubtful that using light rail would cause the average user to lose weight. More, and better, research is needed to determine if that is a realistic outcome."

HRT spokesman Toscano said that one thing is clear: "Riding the Tide will be as much a lifestyle choice as a transportation choice."

Traffic downtown.

The traffic downtown will remain after the train starts. I am accepting all bets at 25/1 minimum $100 bet that traffic will be the same 2 weeks after the train starts.
The traffic is created by the tunnels! The tunnels not people working downtown!
I am also willing to bet traffic will be worse downtown once the train starts. Oh and wait until the first automobile train collision !!!!! Will NTSA personnel be on hand to investigate crash site so as to open up the roadway and train tracks rapidly? Will this take hours of yellow taped investigation areas crawling with people from 4 agencies trying to ensure big government was not at fault and all the cost of repairs can be dumped on the poor citizen. Mark my words it will happen just watch!
As for safety, well we have the same guy in charge of this project that was in charge of the one in video below. Cars, Buses and Trains sharing a road! recipe for disaster. Should have been elevated through downtown.

I think it will be much worse!

Wait until the first wreck like you said. and giving the nature of how our HRT drivers drive now I cant wait to have to play chicklen with them in a train! But Im sure our govt will step in immediatley and call for a moratorium to make sure all of the other trains are safe and in good working order!

HOV Failure!

Make the HOV directional express lanes.

Huh1!

This is one of the dumbest studies I ever heard of.

lighter?

The only thing lighter will be the wallets of the taxpayers who will pay for this albatross

A positive story: HUH?

Who would have thunk that the pilot would dump their negative campaign against thetide and post a positive one. I guess the tide is turning, pun intended. Can't wait to ride the tide to tides games and even more when the tide is in va beach.... Roll Tide!

i dont agree with papaboo

From living here since 1991, I find most people dont want to travel for product. Moving people to the product won't work. developing small shopping centers to cater to peoples needs is the way to go. kind of what they are doing in florida and other states, a planned community.
the small drive where light rail starts and ends, makes no sence to give up the security of your car. This Ight rail expenditure was a dream of a group of pompass jack_ss's

Lighter sure

But it will be in your wallet.

The cost to operate this boonedoggle will drive the taxpaying citizen to eating less since they will not be able to afford to live paying for LRT.

However the fat-cat developers will be gaining more weight eating off the taxpayer dollar.

You have heard it before. LRT - Heavy Taxes.

VB does not need to RIDE THE TIDE OF FAILURE!

Hpw can you even day that?

Va beach has the lowest taxes in the region. The cities of Hampton Roads have some of the lowest taxes of cities in the country. This complaint about taxes is getting older and weaker by the day.
