Nearly 100 people packed a Kill Devil Hills meeting room Monday to see town commissioners consider approving plans for a Lowe's store of about 160,000 square feet and 409 parking spaces on what is now 12.8 acres of undeveloped land along U.S. 158.
Town commissioners heard comments from more than 25 people, asked questions and debated the issue for more than four hours before voting to table the matter until next month.
In the meantime, Mayor Ray Sturza asked Lowe's representatives to consider returning with a more aesthetically pleasing plan. Sturza also urged them to minimize negative impacts on neighbors.
Two neighborhoods stand to be directly affected by the development. Canal Drive runs behind the property, and residents there are concerned about noise, lights and flooding.
On the other side of Landing Drive is Porthole Court, where residents have the same concerns plus traffic-related issues.

How about a Jockey Ridge Walmart?
OBX is one of the last places one can visit and not see every chain store in the nation lining the streets. Local businesses and restaurants are what gives the area the Outer Banks look. If Lowes moves in local hardware stores like Kellogg’s and Tru-Value which are conveniently located near different neighborhoods will surely close. In there place will be a big box store with the standard cookie cutter hardware items one can never find without asking a non-existant sales person. Where will I buy my Flamingos?
