N.C. lottery raffle drawing delayed to boost sales

RALEIGH, N.C.

A raffle drawing by the North Carolina lottery has been extended by 12 days so more tickets can be sold.

The North Carolina Education Lottery had planned to pick three million-dollar winners Wednesday night. Now the "Cash Splash Millionaire Raffle" is set for Sept. 20.

More than 202,000 tickets had been sold as of Wednesday. No more than 500,000 tickets will be sold. The tickets cost $20 each.

Acting lottery director Alice Garland said slower-than-expected sales this summer contributed to the extension. Garland said the drawing won't be delayed further.

The lottery will give out 598 other prizes from $500 to $50,000.

Wrong to Delay Draw

Using the logic of some, if there is a poor crowd at Churchill Downs they will delay the Kentucky Derby till the Saturday they have a nice size crowd. The odds are not 1 in 500,000, they are up to 1 in 500,000. By the same logic ticket buyers should be able to get refunds at any time they want before the draw as they figure tooooo many tickets have been sold. The purchaser and seller have entered into an agreement . Money has changed hands the buyer agrees to pay a price for a chance to win a prize and a predetermined date. The seller agrees, and is licensed to conduct the event on a predetermined date and make good on the offered prizes. This is why some licensing commissions require a deposit in trust up front for the value of the prizes.

Not unfair

The tickets, and ad info spell out that 500,000 tickets will be sold. These people bought the tickets thinking they were up against 500,000 other people.

A date is a date

To change the draw date basically destroys any credibility that this organization currently has or will have for future fund raising events.

That's very unfair to people

That's very unfair to people that already bought tickets. Extending the drawing date and selling more tickets diminishes their chances.

Its

only unfair if they had reached their required quota and max sales limit. In this instance they had not reached an amount of sales to break even and in raffles you have to reach the break even point or you return the price of the ticket money to the ticket holders.

But...........

If some private org had done the same on a raffle ticket the authorities would be looking at it. Isn't the ticket a contract if it has the drawing date on it?
