Norfolk SPCA to put beagle horde up for adoption

Posted to: News Norfolk

NORFOLK

Animal lovers can apply to adopt the 31 beagles that were picked up Friday from a North Carolina research lab next Friday, officials said.

Norfolk SPCA CEO Jeff Roberts said the animals can be seen in the Ballentine Boulevard shelter from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, but the beagles need some time to rest and heal.

“These guys have been though a stressful environment,” Roberts said. “We want them to settle in so people can really see their personalities.”

The beagles were allegedly yelled at and abused at the Gates County, N.C., lab that they came from, according to reports.

They arrived in Norfolk Friday.

Roberts said he’s received many inquiries from the public about adopting the beagles.

we have a 2yr old beagle

from the Beagle Rescue in Chesapeake and we've had him for almost a year now....he is the perfect pup.

I hope that every one of these dogs finds a good home and lives the life every dog deserves.

$$$$ is the real story here

The SPCA uses the front of rescuing these cute dogs in order to get free publicity from the local news media, beg for donations for food and care for these poor animals, then they SELL these dogs at premium prices. It amazes me how the local shelters always seem to have room for these "rescue dogs", but at other times complain they are overcrowded. The media needs to tell us how much the SPCA acquires in donations and adoption fees for these animals.

shelters

I volunteer for the SPCA and other animal rescue groups. The money is desperately needed but everyone has an adoption fee. In fact, they are all pretty much the same price. They are overloaded...they desperately need fosters and more volunteers, as do the other groups. Adoption fees go toward the medical care and housing of other animals. When there is no money, no one gets help.

Rescues and shelters are not perfect. But that doesn't mean they aren't doing their best. Learn about them and maybe get to know some of the people that work for free or for low salaries before you start judging what they do. in fact, why not look at what you do instead of what you don't think others do? just a thought.

My reply to RLS

Don't you think that the reason the SPCA uses the media for free publicity is #1 to let the public know there are animals that needs loving homes and #2 to provide shelter , food and medical care for all animals. I do not think they need to discuss their financial fees with the public, that is their business. Just be thankful they are where they are and willing to help these precious animals of all kinds.

Bouncing Beagles

Nice that these dogs were rescued but I have to tell you that this unseen problem is much more wide spread than you know.

Out here where I live there are hundreds of private "dog prisons", (you can't call them "kennels")hiding in the woods and perhaps thousands of dogs that are bred for hunting.

I have seen this with my own eyes, these dogs are born in and live in squaller, they are abused, misused and mistreated. They are exposed to all kinds of weather and if they bark too much or will not hunt they are sometimes shot or turned loose in the woods to fend for themselves. In that case they most often starve to death or are hit by cars.

There is a large kennel within eyesight of my house, perhaps 30 dogs. What you all saw in that video is tame compared to what I have seen going on next door! Picked up by ears and tail and tossed into cages, dragged out of cages by hind legs, hit, punched, kicked, hit with buckets and even shot.
The authorities say they have to witness the acts firsthand.

That is a true account, are you listening PETA??

No they don't!

If you stir the pot hot enough you can get something done about it. Have you thought of taking video or photos when this is going on? I can tell you first hand that you can do something about it! They have to investigate it if you report it. If the dogs are hurt or show signs of abuse that is all they need. if they don't and you have video or pics of them in the act then that alone is all they need.

and have

YOU reported it? Sounds like you haven't which makes you a participant!!

adopt a beagle

We have a Beagle, and you could not ask for a sweeter dog. Hope they all find forever loving homes! And don't forget the other animals at all of our local shelters!

I love Beagles

As a Beagle owner and lover I wish I could adopt every single last one of those dogs. However, I can't, but I do hope that whomever adopts these wonderful loving dogs that you love them with as much love as possible and walk them ALOT. Walking them a lot will help them from being being bored and chewing your stuff up.

poor title there vp!!

Couldn't you have come up with a better title? Was the use of "hoarde" which has negative connotations necessary? I think not!
