The Portsmouth school division is among four finalists for a national award.

School leaders will learn next month whether they have won the 2010 Award for Urban School Board Excellence. The honor is given by the National School Boards Association's Council of Urban Boards of Education.

Competitors are judged on criteria including excellence in school board governance and closing the achievement gap. Portsmouth is competing against the Houston Independent School District and Baltimore City and Broward County public school systems.

"These finalists demonstrate the innovative efforts that are occurring in urban education," NSBA executive director Anne L. Bryant said in a news release. "Too often we hear about the failures in our urban schools, yet these school districts are successful in helping children reach great academic heights."

The recognition shows that the city's schools are competitive, Portsmouth School Board Chairman James Bridgeford said.
