Skanska wins $164M pier replacement deal at Navy shipyard

Posted to: Business Defense - Shipyards Military Portsmouth

The Navy awarded Skanska USA Civil Southeast Inc. a $164.3 million contract to replace Pier 5 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Skanska USA Civil, based in Virginia Beach, will demolish Piers 4 and 5, both built in the early 1900s and other structures to make way for one new 1,225-foot pier.

The new pier, designed to accommodate all current and future Navy vessels, will feature a pump station, restrooms, heavy weather mooring and a crane on rails. Skanska also will build a new bulkhead and dredge the area from Pier 3 to Pier 6. Work is expected to be completed by November 2014. Skanska was one of five bidders for the contract, awarded by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic, in Norfolk.
