Police will accept out-of-date and unneeded prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines in a statewide effort later this month, the city announced this afternoon.
Called the prescription drug take-back day, Suffolk officers will collaborate with Virginia State Police, the Richmond district of the Drug Enforcement Administration and other local agencies to cut down on the number of drugs that could potentially hurt someone, according to a Suffolk news release.
Police will collect controlled and uncontrolled drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25 at the North Main Street and College Drive Walmarts. The substances will be destroyed, police said.
Liquid medicines need to be in their original container; intravenous solutions, injectibles and syringes won't be accepted for safety reasons, police said.

Great Idea
This is a service to the community, to keep these medicines from acting as pollutants if dumped into the trash or flushed down the toilet.
I do hope the Police are aware that if the drugs are packed in blister packs, single use packaging, that the Western Tidewater Free Clinic may be able to use them.
