Surry Power Station sirens to be tested today

Posted to: News Western Tidewater

The sirens at Dominion Virginia Power’s Surry Power Station nuclear plant will be tested today.

The 68 sirens will sound at 11:10 a.m. with a steady tone for three minutes, according to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. The sirens, all within a 10-mile radius of the plant, are located in Williamsburg, Newport News and in Surry, James City, York and Isle of Wight counties.

In an actual emergency, the sirens would sound with four three-minute tones. A silent one-minute interval would happen in between each tone.

When the sirens sound, residents should watch TV or listen to a local radio station to get more information.

The sirens are tested quarterly. The last test this year is scheduled for Dec. 8.
