The bounce back for Virginia Tech's football team begins this weekend against James Madison. But maybe the Dukes should've been the Hokies' jumping-off point instead of their soft place to land.
After his team's season-opening 33-30 loss to No. 3 Boise State on Monday night, coach Frank Beamer bemoaned the lack of a preseason game in college football.
"We weren't a great football team tonight," he said. "We made some critical mistakes. But I firmly believe we're going to be a great football team."
Therein, perhaps, lies his mistake. Because knowing that uncharacteristic gaffes are more likely early in the season, many elite teams do schedule a pseudo scrimmage.
Seven of the preseason top-10 teams played low-level, non-BCS teams in their openers. That mild competition included San Jose State, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Rice, Utah State, Western Kentucky and Eastern Illinois.
The Hokies, however, for the fourth time in seven seasons, played a top-five opponent in one of their first two games. They've lost all four, throwing their own national title aspirations into doubt, while catapulting their opponent to big things.
Southern California (2004) won the national title after beating Tech in the opener. LSU (2007) did the same after thumping the Hokies in Week 2. Alabama followed suit last season, hoisting the crystal football after escaping a Tech team that led in the fourth quarter.
Will Boise State be the fourth eventual national champion in seven years to kick off its run by breaking the Hokies' hearts?
Beamer's team was agonizingly close to reversing that trend against the Broncos. Tech stormed back from a 17-0 deficit and led until the final 1:09, when Boise's standout quarterback, Kellen Moore, orchestrated the decisive drive.
That grabbed the headlines, but it wasn't the story of the game. Not for the Hokies, anyway. After the first quarter, and before that final drive, Tech outscored the Broncos 30-9. They dominated during stretches.
Quarterback Tyrod Taylor sparkled, completing 15 of 22 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 81 yards on 13 carries - excluding a trio of sacks. The defense forced two critical fumbles that led to Tech touchdowns. The Hokies, in that stretch, looked like national title contenders.
But in the first quarter, they looked like an unprepared mess, a gang that needed a warm-up game. Taylor fumbled away the second snap of the game. He explained it later by saying the center somehow thought he was in shotgun formation instead of directly underneath him.
In the process of spotting Boise the big early lead, the Hokies also ran into the Broncos' punter, missed a field goal try, sailed a kickoff out of bounds and got a punt blocked.
"You could've blocked that kick," Beamer told a reporter afterward. "It was a new guy communicating to a new guy."
There were a lot of new guys for the Hokies on Monday night, particularly on defense. Think the seven new starters on that side of the ball could've used a cupcake opener to get comfortable?
It should be noted that Tech was originally scheduled to play Boise State on Oct. 2 but moved the game at ESPN's request - and for a $2.35 million payday. Only time will tell if it was worth it.
One certainty: New starting linebackers Jeron Gouveia-Winslow and Bruce Taylor weren't quite ready for the big-time in Week 1. Gouveia-Winslow saw the first and last touchdown passes of the game sail over his head. Taylor was flagged for a late hit that prolonged the Broncos' winning drive and earlier whiffed on a tackle in the backfield that turned into a 71-yard touchdown run.
"We don't usually miss tackles," Beamer said. "There were just some young guys making some young-guy mistakes."
Teams like Boise State capitalize on such errors. Teams like James Madison? Maybe not. Had the Hokies started with the Dukes, they'd likely be 1-0 today and comfortably inside the top 10 of the AP and coaches' polls, instead of sliding to No. 13 in both.
And now, in another scheduling twist, by moving up the Boise date, Tech has left itself only four days to prepare for JMU. Taylor said what the Hokies need is "seniors taking control of the locker room, making sure everybody's on the same page, and go out there and work hard in practice."
The good news for Tech is it has seen this movie before, and the Hokies know there can be a happy ending. Early loss, strong finish, 10-plus wins and maybe an ACC championship along the way. That's been the story line for six years now.
But these Hokies were hoping for much more. Their dreams are now derailed by little more than zealous scheduling and typical first-game hiccups that hurt Tech more than Boise State.
"It was an opportunity missed," Taylor said. "But I believe that we beat ourselves. It wasn't anything (Boise) did to beat us. "

A little knowledge for you Rip
Since joining the ACC we've won 3 out of 5 of the last championships. Yes UVA/ODU have National Titles. However they are not in ANY mainstream sports. Sailing, Lacrosse, Boxing, and Field Hockey. Big whoop! Despite what you think money is what fuels collegiate sports. ESPN/ABC pay schools and conferences to broadcast their sports teams and the sad truth is that most of the general public do not care about these minor sports. I'm not taking away anything these students do, because they deserve the awards for their hard work. But when it comes down to it, football is what sells and people care about VT. Think what you want and talk trash on here all day, it will not take away from the fact that VT football is a powerhouse. The good thing about this all is that you don't even have to listen to or read about Tech anything if you don't want to. It's awesome in America isn't it? Which leads me back to the first thing I said, which was, if you don't like VT, don't waste your time following them, don't read these articles, and then don't complain about it on the Internet.
I'm baaaaaaaaaaaack!!
Let me address a few comments below, it's obvious I have hurt people's feelings, I will just give the facts. A comment was made I would not say this to any VT fan's face? Wrong answer, I say it everyday at work and outside work, and no VT fan has a comeback for never winning a Nat'l Championship in any sport. A comment was made I couldn't get into VT? Wrong Answer, I was offered a full ride to play baseball, I turned down b/c I did not want to play for a school that was never in the top 25. VT baseball in top 25 this year for 1st time since 1990... no thanks. A comment was made that VT is the best school in the state? Wrong answer, academics would go to William and Mary and UVA, sports wise, it would go to UVA and ODU, combined 70 national championships to VT 0. I understand VT fans don't like woman's sports, soccer, ect, but you have the same sports and never win. When VT girl's softball got to WS vt fans were coming out of the wood work, typical fairweather fans. Your basketball team had the 345th ranked schedule in D1, nice! Yes you are a top 25 football team, but no one cares, my goal is to make that point to all of you. 0-22 vs top 5, you should win 10 games every year when yo
RIP21
Even though RIP21 may seem bitter towards Tech, you do have to give the guy credit. He does make a lot of good points about the Hokies, and their entire athletic program. It's so difficult to fathom how an entire program has never won a National Championship thats sanctioned by the NCAA (Bass Fishing doesn't count). As far as the football program, how n' the heck are they 9-14 all time in bowls? As much hype as they receive every year for the last 15 yrs or so, I feel they should have a better record than that. Metallica and "Enter Sandman" seem to be the best part of that entire athletic program! I love people who have a lot of courage, and who can back it up with a plethora of information!
I only have one thing to say
There is only one team in Virginia that has 32 national Championships. 1 Walk through the Constant Center and you can see that our Trophy cases are plenty full. 1 walk through blacksburgh and all that you will see is maroon and orange turkeys.
Not much to brag about
It's actually 28. If you're going to talk trash at least get it right. Yes ODU has 28 Nat'l Titles and FOUR individual titles. Three of those are in women's basketball and the rest are in co-ed sailing and women's field hockey. Not much to really brag about.
rip21
I absolutely love Kyle's Va Tech articles.. I can count on one thing for sure every single time. RIP21 will successfully get under the skin of every Tech fan. From an outsiders perspective, it seems RIP21 is just stating the facts. While I understand why Kyle writes what he does, it only continues to build up the hopes and dreams of so many Hokie fans..And for what? To have your dreams shattered every single year.. Although, this year is really bad. Its usually doesnt happen until mid-October. Oh well.. There is always next year..Keep up the good work Kyle. You too RIP.. Oh, one more thing RIP..Tech has won a nat'l championship-Marcel Lomnicky won the 2009 Hammer Throw..Well done Marcel, well done..
RIP21
nca31 and RIP21 aren't giving VT near enough credit. In 2007 they defeated 35 other schools and won the Under Armour Bass Fishing National Championship. So that makes 2 championships for the Hokies. I was there that day and all I can say is that it was special. Nothing could make me prouder than seeing those Hokies fish their hearts out!
My bad. I stand corrected.
My bad. I stand corrected. The only issue I have with that title is: The guy that just got caught cheating at the BassMasters tourny for stuffing weights into the bass he was catching.. He's a Tech grad..
unfair expectations??
Whew, I guess the comment below me doesn't like Tech Football. As a newcomer to watching college football, I was a bit perplexed at the hoopla over this first game. While I root for VT, I felt for the players on both teams before the game even started. The pressure they must have been under to perform! To say the the "loser" of the game would have no chance at winning a national title places an all or nothing stigma on their entire season. How tough it must be to lose your first game and feel like you've lost an entire season. Granted, the first quarter was lop-sided, yet they rallied and came back and I commend the coaching staff for what they helped their players accomplish. I think they look very promising and I look forward to seeing them win WAY more than they lose. GO HOKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excuses
Kyle writes another 10 paragraph article that just recycles all the other articles he has written. So now you are saying VT should schedule a cupcake?? Boise didn't! they even came across country and played VT at home. VT has enough cupcakes on the schedule. VT is a door mat for espn, that is why the game was moved up. That empty glass case at VT waiting for a Nat'l championship tells you all you need to know. 0-22 vs top 5 and 7-30 against top 10, does not matter when you play them, your record speaks for itself. A school that has never won it all in anything. Article after article is just watering down VT football.
