Waiting for Earl
No time to check out the Boardwalk today? No need. We were there.
Hmmmm. With a hurricane buzz-sawing its way up the Atlantic and a tropical storm due to hit Virginia Beach, what better band to be playing the Boardwalk Friday?

While swimmers were being whistled out of the water, surfers were everywhere. Odd. Not a single "Virginia Has No Waves" T-shirt in sight.

In a smart move, someone thought to lash Boardwalk portapotties together. Sure hope that single yellow rope holds them in place. Otherwise...well, let's not think about it.

Some Pilot readers have been asking about the stage scaffolding that's in place on the beach at 5th Street.

Seems the city is building a berm of sand to protect it from the pounding surf.
You're probably wondering why a lifeguard is sitting on a stand directly behind this giant manmade dune. That isn't a lifeguard. It can't be, right?

Now this is a lifeguard. Note the cool "Coast Guard" hat. Larry Watson is on his feet, keeping an eye on everyone in the water at 17th Street.

Missing Swimmer
There's a Cat 3 hurricane closing in. The Elizabeth River isn't exactly clean. Clearly, Mr. Darwin is working overtime.

04:20 and so Far No Earl.
Just made two runs from CBBT up to Exmore and back. One up and down route 13 and the other up and down route 600. A little wind but not a lick of precip. Stopped by the house and went up to the Chicken run and lit up the girls with my flashlight. 14 beady little eyes shone back at me. What? A bonafide Chicken Party going on. Little knuckleheads are having a blast. If we get the 50 mph gust as predicted the party might just be disrupted. We shall see.

Reset your clock Kerry.
Noticed that on my previous post the time reads 1154. Sorry Charlie, the Atomic time is actually 00:59.
No Chicken Littles around here.
I experienced Super Typhoon Betsy while in South East Asia back in 68. 185 mph sustained with 200+ gusts. Dug in on the side of a mountain that stuck out into the South China Sea just north of Da Nang. What a ride. It's going on 01:00 Friday and so far Earl is not impressing me. Still time though. When I get off duty at around 06:00 this morning I'll probably have Chickens plastered all over the side of the Chicken Run. Those wacky girls like to get out and run around like fools whenever it storms.
