PORTSMOUTH
What a time for a TV station to be short-handed. It's happening this week at local NBC affiliate WAVY as Hurricane Earl approaches the region.
Meteorologist Jon Cash is gone. He disappeared from the early morning newscast he has been part of for years. He's also gone from the Channel 10 website.
Why did Cash's career at WAVY end so abruptly?
On his ministry website, Cash says he was fired at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
"Details of this sad event will be upcoming in the days and weeks ahead as I seek wise counsel," Cash wrote on the site.
The station's general manager, Doug Davis, would not give details. He didn't say whether Cash was let go or resigned.
"I can confirm that Jon is no longer at the station," Davis said.
Cash started with the station in 1989, charming viewers with his folksy style, his support for the Washington Redskins, and his "snow hope" watch in cold weather.
Cash, in tandem with Kerri Furey, Don Roberts, Cheryl Tan and Chopper 10 pilot John Massey, helped WAVY to the No. 1 spot in early morning newscast ratings.
The WAVY team was dominant until lately, when WVEC began to challenge for the lead, recently adding a 4:30 a.m. newscast to get the jump on the competition.
Cash's departure leaves the Super Doppler 10 weather forecasting to Don Slater, Jeremy Wheeler and the recently hired Sagay Galindo, a Chesapeake native.

Hooray! Jon Cash is gone!
It's about time WAVY 10! He was so obnoxious and annoying with his thinking he was God just because he was a weather man. I swear I think the man thought he ruled the weather and liked to hear his own nasal voice speak all the time. I just have to say thank you for finally firing him because maybe now this will knock him down a few notches off his god-pole. I do love Jeremy Wheeler and personally is easier on the eyes and ears for that matter!!!
Jon Cash Firing
It is so amazing how critical people can be of others. My prayers go out to Mr. Cash and his family regardless of the reason he was fired. I would also like to remind channel 10 that viewer ratings are important to a network and I along with hundreds of others will now be switching channels for the news and weather. I will miss Mr. Cash especially during the winter months since he also shared my love of snow. I wish him the best in what every God has for him in the future.
Jon Cash
I recently heard about the "firing" of Jon Cash. I, too, have noticed how the two women treated him on the show. He was constantly being interupted by one or the other and treated (in my opinion) as if he wasn't good enough to be on the same program. Well, excuse me ladies and I use that term lightly, you both need to go somewhere especially the one at the desk. Keri needs to keep her smart remarks and dirty looks to herself. Cheryl is not quite as bad but given time, she will be just as snobby and self centered as Keri. They both need to go and let the guys carry the show until more "mature acting" females can be found. I wish Jon all the best. I also loved his giant snowflake. He was a great weatherman. Miss you Jon.
Cash
"The idea that he's planning on coming out and bad mouthing his former employer on Tuesday in print media calls into question his faith in and of itself because I'm pretty sure Jesus' teachings spoke against vindictiveness and revenge"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vindictiveness and revenge seems to be the mainstay of Christianity since the late Roman Empire and the early Christian Kingdoms of old Europe transformed Jesus into a War God intead of The Prince of Peace. You'd be surprised how many church going Christians I've heard talking about bombing Islamic Countries back to the stone age thus killing many non-combatants. From what I've studied the entire history of Christianity is chocked full of such violence.
From what I understand, Cash is heavily connected with this new White Christian-White American Tea-Party bunch who would like nothing more than to take us all back to those days when the church called the shots over state and lives of all others.
One's Beliefs
I realize there are many evangelical Christians who would like nothing more than having their beliefs hold sway over state affairs, employment and all other aspects of American life. Sorry we just can't go back to the Middle Ages where Christian leaders and their biblical rules were the law of the land. I wouldn't want to live in a country where that kind of cult-like pack mentality could very well punish people who do not hold those same beliefs. I already live in a country where cult-like zealots see fit to infect all venues of free thought and speech, deeming all who are different from them as 'Devil Worshippers' who are going to hell and make a big stink because a television personality/weatherman got fired for not abiding by his agreements of employment. Wouldn't want a police officer not responding to an emergency call because he felt it was more important to preach the Christian gospel instead of doing what he or she is paid to do.
The day the United States becomes solely a Christian Nation who has no consideration for those of other beliefs, is the day I quit being American, as a country where church has taken over state affairs is no better than those fanatical Islamic
What if God wanted this?
Perhaps God wanted Jon to be full time in his ministry and wanted him to let go of the other job. Sometimes God closes a door in order for us to see more clearly what He desires for us. It will be interesting to see how Jon Cash handles this and I for one as a Christian will be watching. Perhaps this was God's way of setting up bigger and better things for Jon and sometimes these things don't involve money. Working for God doesn't always pay in cash.
I will miss the snow hope.
I watch WAVY every morning before going to work and found out from a friend about Jon. I was wondering where he was 'coz I haven't seen him in awhile and was surprised about this. I think an annoucement about this should have been addressed to the WAVY viewers 'coz randomly finding out about something like this makes it seem like there is something being hidden. Well, I will miss the snow flake and snow hope index. I thought Jon made the morning fun and interesting. It's gonna be a little weird not seeing him anymore.
