2nd District candidates make closing arguments

Posted to: Elections News U.S. House Elections

VIRGINIA BEACH

The three candidates in the 2nd Congressional District sparred but also agreed Thursday night on some issues during their last debate before next week 's election.

The forum, organized by the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater, focused heavily on the United States' relationship with Israel and touched on the new health care law, the stimulus bill, negative campaign ads, and the candidates' views on Islam and terrorism.

U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, Republican Scott Rigell and independent Kenny Golden told the standing-room-only crowd of 300 at the Simon Family Jewish Community Center that they consider the United States and Israel inseparable allies.

"We know that Israel cannot have a bad day militarily," said Nye, who is a Democrat.

"I know there is a special story for Israel. It goes back to the Bible," Rigell said. "I believe the original deed for that land is with the Jewish people."

The candidates offered strong words when asked about plans to place an Islamic center, including a mosque, near the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York City and the firing of an NPR political commentator for saying he is worried when he sees Muslim passengers in traditional clothing seated near him on commercial jetliners.

All said the New York center should be moved or at least used as a center for all faiths - not just Islam.

"That project should show some good taste and move somewhere else," Golden said.

Nye said people of different backgrounds should be able to share their beliefs with one another. "One of the strengths of this country... is the fact that we are free to say what we feel about things."

Rigell said there are times when "political correctness" prevents people from being honest about their fears and feelings.

The firing of Juan Williams by NPR for expressing his concern was wrong, Rigell said. "You know, frankly, I would share his view. I think for him to be fired for saying something that is an entirely rational concern is, I think, a poor decision."

Asked how their own religious beliefs would affect their actions if elected, all said they are Christians but that isn't their sole identity.

"My decisions, in terms of votes, are guided by the Constitution of the United States of America and my conversations with people of Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore," Nye said.

Rigell was more concise: "I'm not a pastor; I'm a businessman. I know how to create jobs. That's what I want to do."

Rigell and Nye spoke of their differences on federal stimulus spending and their attack ads on each other about the subject.

Nye pointed out that he supported the multibillion-dollar stimulus bill last year because it would create jobs, and he was critical of Rigell, a car dealer, for opposing it while participating in the "Cash for Clunkers" program. Under the program, car buyers were eligible for federal funds when they traded in their high-mileage older cars for fuel-efficient new vehicles.

Nye said Rigell's opposition to the stimulus bill was based on politics and not on principled beliefs.

Rigell, whose dealerships made more than $400,000 in sales with the program, said he resented Nye's criticism and that he had no choice but to participate or lose money to other dealers. "The rebate went to the customers, not the dealerships," he said.

Golden, who sat between the two, gestured to Nye, then to Rigell, and said: "You voted for it. You used it. I wouldn't have voted for it."

Voters in the district, which includes Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore plus part of Norfolk and Hampton, will elect one of the three men to a two-year term Tuesday.

Golden for Congress?

I highly respect candidate Golden. But now it is time for reality. He was nominated twice for SECNAV, but was not selected, and neither will he win this race on Tuesday. Therefore, he should step aside and support another candidate. Then he still will have the opportunity to support the causes he believes in.

31 YEARS OF ACTIVE DUTY NAVY EXPERIENCE

For some reason, in spite of the polls paid for by the gop and tv networks, Kenny keeps polling above 20% here on the Pilot polls. A month ago the pilot commissioned this unscientific poll of their readers: http://hamptonroads.com/polls/who-would-be-your-choice-win-2nd-congressional-district-race-virginia?cid=srch

How can this be?

RETIRED CAPTAIN?

The problem with selecting Kenny Golden is his former occupation. I salute the Captain for his desire to contribute, and his dedicated service to this country. . But those of us, who served, know you do not become a 0-6 on merit alone. It is a political career built on give and take, and following orders. Keeping a little black book, and being in someone else’s book. Unfortunately, at this time a vote for Golden, is a vote for Nye.
Rather you believe Nye’s interoperation of his votes or not doesn’t matter. The fact remains; we cannot allow another term of Pelosi, and her desire to dismantle the Constitution.

31 YEARS OF ACTIVE DUTY NAVY EXPERIENCE

Anonymous Rigell supporter/volunteer, Kenny Golden served honorably in the navy for 31 years. He was nominated for SECNAV by John Warner and George Allen for a reason. Experience. After John Warner retired we were left without the kind of knowhow that Kenny Golden would bring back to Washington to represent our region.

One thing people are noticing is that Kenny Golden does not engage in negative advertising. He is as disgusted with negative attack ads as the voters are. Even if he was the rich guy Scott Rigell is he would not spend his money attacking his opponents. That is a major difference between your friend the wealthy car dealer and Captain Kenneth E. "Kenny" Golden USN Ret. KEnny Golden is a working mans man, the real deal.

VOTE for an independent. VOTE for maturity. VOTE for experience.

VOTE FOR KENNY GOLDEN on November 2nd.

31 YEARS OF ACTIVE DUTY NAVY EXPERIENCE

Kenny Golden is the only candidate with active duty military experience. Kenny commanded the largest amphibious fleet since Korean conflict. Kenny Golden knows the military better than both of his opponents combined and will lead more effectively than Scott Rigell a successful car dealer or Glenn Nye an incumbent congressman.

43% of our economy is defined by military business. Our jobs base is losing ground to other states with more experienced leadership who siphon away our core industries. As industry leaves our economy is weakened.

At 60 years of age who depends on our governments healthcare system to be fixed, No other candidate understands the issues facing seniors better on a personal level.

I am proud to support Kenny Golden and I hope you will join other independents, republicans and democrats from all walks of life who are voting for principled leadership, maturity and experience next tuesday.

14 Straight Months of Unemployment over 9.5%

Here is why the Nye/Pelosi Congress needs to go:

14 STRAIGHT MONTHS OF UNEMPLOYMENT OF OVER 9.5%

Weakest "recovery" in 80 years, a jobless recovery and it looks like we are about to dip back into a recession.

Whether you like it or not, Nye votes with Pelosi well over 80% of the time. And the most important vote our next Congressman will be for Speaker. She doesn't deserve another 2 years.

I'm voting for Scott Rigell because he's a businessman, from the private sector, and heaven knows we need more businesspeople in Washington and less politicians.

Bryan Stuart is a political supporter for Rigell

and write a zelous one at that, What he failed to include with his political ad was "Paid for and authorized by ....". He is a serial blogger for Rigell, he has a room full of paid "volunteers" doing blog ops like this.. Do yourself a favor, go visit all of the HQ's and meet the people..

Bryan

You sound suspiciously like a TV Ad. I just hope you base your vote on something more concrete.

Voter Comments

As I was reading these comments, I suddenly realized that we the voter are no different than the candidates. Each comment starts with which candidate they support and why, which is productive. Then the next sentence begins the mudd slinging against the opposing candidate. I for one hate this type of campaigning from the candidates. Then why as voters do we continue these type of tactics. I am still undecided who I am voting for. In the coming days I hope to get more information on what each candidate stands for and how he will represent his Constituency. All the other misinformation is just confusing the issues, but it sells newspapers.

Misinformation - You go that RIGHT!

In the mail today I got a Kenny Golden flyer which did not identify who paid or authorized it. I know it wasn't from Kenny's camp as they are flat broke so were in the heck did it come from?

Well, the only way Nye can beat Rigell is via Kenny Golden. Don’t believe me? Some of the smartest Democrats in the country agree and are dumping gobs of money into Virginia's 2nd District and it’s ending up in my mail box. I've gotten no less than four (likly five) glossy mailers of which the first one I could have sworn Kenny produced, but low and behold it was paid for by the Democratic Party of Virginia!

The Democrats will likely spend more than $300,000 dollars marketing Kenny Golden as a hard core conservative in an effort to secure my vote. If you voted in the last few Republican primaries you too are likely to witness this absolutely Machiavellian campaign tactic.

Kenny Golden is the direct byproduct of Gary Byler and his leadership. I saw firsthand how the Republican Party, lead by Gary, slanted the playing field and treated Kenny Golden like dirt during the opening stages of the Republican Primary. This lack of impartiality and back room dealing directly resulted i
