VIRGINIA BEACH
Alexander's on the Bay, the iconic Chic's Beach restaurant on Ocean View Avenue, is back in business. It has been nearly 11 months since a nor'easter sent its bar tumbling into the water.
"We're high and dry," said co-owner Denice Shafiee. "I'm open for business, and I need my old customers back." Since Friday, the remodeled Alexander's has opened nightly at 5.
The rebuilding took so long because a fire, thefts and insurance disputes slowed repairs. Shafiee said she hopes the traditional "Santa Count" for charity can continue with donated Santas, having lost thousands of the decorative items to fire or theft.
The restaurant's outer walls have been reinforced, and the inside has been renovated. Tables have replaced booths, the carpet is new, the ceiling is higher and the bar has been redesigned.
Many staffers are back, and best-selling dishes such as crabcakes, fried shrimp, raspberry duckling and "Alexander's Amalgamation," a seafood combo, are on the menu.
Located at 4536 Ocean View Ave., the restaurant also has updated its website at alexandersonthebayrestaurant.com.

Not an ad
This is absolutely news. My husband and I have been waiting months for Alexander's to reopen, and now, thanks to this article, we know that it has finally happened. It was news when the storm caused damage and when there was a fire, so why isn't the successful opening an appropriate follow up news story? Thank you for this good news!
This is a place that..
will never see me again. I've eaten there a few times, and I admit the view is superb, as is the food. But the waiting staff has often had something to be desired. The last time I was there I had to demand to see the manager because of the attitude of the waiter we had. Lesson learned. As I said, never again!
Has anyone ever seen how much a ad cost in the Pilot?
Has anyone ever seen how much a ad cost in the Pilot? Obviously this is a ad. How many restaurants in Tidewater get this kind of service? The Advertisment should at least state "Paid Advertisement" before the readers have to muddle their way though this nonsense. The owners states that she is looking to get their old customers back. Well then take out a ad!
"a" vs "an"
The indefinite article "an" is typically used by English speakers to introduce nouns or noun phrases that begin with vowels. Such as "advertisements," "ad," or (below) "overpriced tourist trap".
The indefinite article "a" is used for the same purpose with nouns or noun phrases that begin with a consonant.
Examples:
"A" bad writer
"An" awful writer
Explaining that made me hungry. I would now like a crab cake.
Advertorial?
Shouldn't this "news" article be identified as an advertorial?
Ads
This is not an unusual article. I notice/read articles every day in the Pilot and think the same thing. A lot of the stories in the paper just seem to be advertisements for the company that is being highlited, and not much interesting in the story. I guess it fills up space.
All they had to do
Gee, all they had to do to get the "free" add was to have part of their resteraunt fall into the bay, get burned down AND robbed.
Well
Stories about falling into the bay, burning, and the robbery are all news articles that have previously appeared in the paper. This is basically an article about re-opening. Run an ad signifying this event.
Glad they're back
My father used to rave about this place and every time I used to go there I thought the food and service were great. I look forward to going back and having their calmari
Who cares
Nothing but a over priced tourist trap. The food was mediocre at best and the service stunk.
