VIRGINIA BEACH
Jim Merrill, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools, is giving an annual talk on the State of the Schools before an audience of local business leaders this afternoon.
The annual event, sponsored by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, is an opportunity for the business community to see what taxpayers get out of funding the public schools in the city. Merrill plans to discuss strengths such as academic performance as well as challenges like funding.
He also plans to discuss the division's strategic plan, known as Compass to 2015. The event, which began at noon at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, cost $30 a person to attend.

There are 2 solutions
There are 2 immediate solutions to the problems with the schools.
1] Put the Bible back in the schools. Since God has been taken out of the schools, they have gone down hill. Prayer & Bible study is important in our daily lives. It would also be important in our schools also.
2] Stop the busing. Our neighborhoods are mixed enough now, that we dont' have waste all that money on buses, gas & repairs. Besides when gas goes to around $5-6 a gallon, it will bankrupt the schools. We talk about obesity in our children, I guess so. When I was a kid, I walked home from school & took the city bus to school. Purchase a monthly ticket very cheap. I also walked hom from sports practices. Great exercise. don't say it's not safe. You walk in groups.
If you don't do these 2 things, then you are doomed to complete failure. Most businesses' don't have a lot of extra money, do to the recession. where have you people been? The whole country is going bankrupt. Look at the bank bailout, cash for clunkers, the cities, the school systems, the insurance industry. Ride around & look at all the commercial properties up for rent.
“sponsored by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce,
is an opportunity for the business community to see what taxpayers (business, not PARENTS) get out of funding the public schools in the city”. The HRCC which is not inclusive of all Hampton Roads (disclosure I never bought into the Hampton Roads business concept) is evaluating the educational performance of the Va Bch school system as presented by the Superintendent. High School education has evolved with technology and equates to entry-level employment opportunities; however, has the superintendent addressed the parents what is required of their children to succeed?
My question: Is the City of Va Beach developing children to think and reason, not fill a “local job”, to attend Vocational Technical or college to expand their horizon, and ask the questions. Why What if
If so, the child is prepared to take on the world, and if necessary leave Va Beach to fulfill THEIR DREAMS and GOALS!
