Legal assistance available for active-duty troops

Posted to: Military

Service members and their families now have more help available if they're facing serious, non-criminal legal problems and can't afford a lawyer.

The American Bar Association is adding to the free legal help available from the military and legal aid through its Military Pro Bono Project, which connects eligible active-duty service members with attorneys for civil legal issues.

The project accepts service members at a pay grade of E6 and below. The effort focuses on landlord/tenant disputes, consumer law (including bankruptcy), family law, trusts and estates (including probate), guardianship, and employment. Family members seeking help will need to be acting as a surrogate for the service member in the legal issue.

Referrals are made only by military legal assistance attorneys, so first contact your legal assistance office. For more details, visit www.militaryprobono.org.
