Posted to: Business Education News

Five Hampton Roads colleges will receive grants of $10,000 to $40,000 from The Dominion Foundation, the charitable arm of Dominion Virginia Power.

The grants will support programs in business, engineering, conservation, environmental and technical studies.

The grants to Hampton University, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Thomas Nelson Community College and Tidewater Community College will be presented Wednesday morning at an event at The Founders Inn on Regent University's campus in Virginia Beach.

Hampton University will get $40,000 to create multimedia projects to educate the public about natural resources, power generation, renewable power and energy conservation.

Norfolk State University will get $30,000 to create and staff a computer and robotics lab for K-12 students in the community.

Old Dominion University in Norfolk will get $30,000 to upgrade laboratory equipment for three courses related to power and electricity.

Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton will get a $10,000 grant to help students learn about wind turbine technology and design.

And Tidewater Community College will get $40,000 to develop a renewable energy program to train current students for emerging jobs, provide workforce training to companies working in the renewable energy field and make the college operate in a more environmentally-friendly way.

Other recipients include George Mason University, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University and seven others. For the full list, visit Dominion's awards page.

Why would a company that

Why would a company that makes money on generating power want to see people come up with solutions to not need their services (aka, conserve?)

BTW, lower my rates and build more nuclear plants. And make your lame auto-dialer say which account it's calling for when it calls to warn of a service interruption.

ditto on that

auto dialer! I got a new phone number last december which, unfortunately, belonged to an individual who owes everybody and their brother (my opinion based on the collection calls we receive DAILY). Anyway, Dom Va keeps calling *my* number saying service will be interrupted if payment isn't made yet there's no indication of who they are calling, the amount owed or an account number. I cannot express how unglued I became with the first call I received.

Odd that the ceremony is at

Odd that the ceremony is at The Founder's Inn but no money is going to Regent U. It is very nice to see Dominion giving back to the community. Hope more businesses follow.

I don't get it

The SCC sets rates for DP as well as Cox. Yet they both have money to give away. Maybe the SCC should lower the rates these companies charge. Let me give my money to whomever I want instead of me giving it to them and then they give it to whomever and get credit for being such a giving company. Maybe lower rates are in store.

Flat Rate

My understanding is that most multi-building colleges and universities pay an agreed upon lump sum for power estimated annual usage negating the expense of meters, reading, and billing for every single building on campus.

Tax Write Off?

Since Dominon has strong armed us all into paying obscene rates can we get individual tax write offs for these donations? Hell, one year's power bill for me can practically put a kid through school.

Where is the Tribe?

The College of William & Mary is conspicuous by its absence...

W&M isn't an engineering school

William and Mary is a liberal arts school, and they don't have an engineering department. I don't think the grant could have helped any students with robotics labs, turbine design, or power electronics because that isn't what students go to William and Mary for.

good start

Dominion must have a gajillion dollars with record profits and the capability to fund whole programs at each if the schools and the wherewithall to make them viable. This is yet another public gesture that will do some good but.........
I am suspicious of DP's commitment to changing the power situation knowing that it will cost them to adapt. Sort of like asking me to pay them extra in my monthly bill to fund their green project. Come on
