Man freed from Va. Beach eatery's exhaust vent

Posted to: News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

When the owner of Harold's restaurant entered his eatery Saturday, he knew almost immediately that something was amiss.

The fire suppression system in the kitchen had gone off and Harold Owens heard a noise that he thought was coming from above. Then he saw legs and feet dangling from the hood over the stove.

Owens called the police, and crews responded about 9 a.m. to cut away the metal duct to free the man, Fire Department Battalion Chief Ken Pravetz said. The man had climbed into the duct about 3 a.m. in what Pravetz said was likely an attempt to enter the restaurant, on Virginia Beach Boulevard near Town Center.

Owens said the trapped man, whom police did not identify, was a former employee who apologized for trying to climb through the duct. The man spent about eight hours in the 18-by-18-inch exhaust vent before rescuers dislodged him about 10:45 a.m.

The trapped man was alert and suffered only minor injuries, Pravetz said. He was taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

A police spokeswoman said a detective was on the scene but provided no reason the man was in the duct.

Owens said he found the situation anything but amusing. Rather, he said, he was disgusted by it, especially if burglary was the motive.

Extensive damage to the ventilation system was done during the rescue, though no dollar amount was available.

"We're a small business struggling in this economy," Owens said. "We're going to do the best we can to get going again."

The restaurant reopened later that day, Owens said, once repairs were done and he got clearance from the fire and health departments.

Dirt Bag

This dirt bag should have to pay for this. I owned a resteraunt at the beach a few years back and your always on edge whether you're going to make it to the next day. Something like this can push you over the edge, financially. And sadly, I kept going, know I had an obligation to keep my employees employed. I plan on going to this place this week to help this guy out!

should have taken

a lot longer to report it.

If the business has to be closed anyway, then sit down for a long chat with the fellow just hanging around.

Harold's has great pizza

Harold's has great pizza if you're into the homemade type.

please!!!

tell us this idiot's name!!!!!

Meet me at Harold

Harolds is a great place to eat with great service. The owners do an awesome job. We go there for many occassions. Right after my fathers funeral we all went there as a "neutral" place due to all of the family dysfunction. Harolds wife was our waitress and was tuned into our "party". Every dish was betterthan the next. The homemade pizzas!?? Great! My mom introduced my x fiancee to his wife current wife at Harolds. They named their dog "Hank". A great place to go after the theatre too! .....lets pick it up this week and everyone try to have a meal there to help makeup for the dolt in the air vent who stole real time from Harolds.

With todays attitude...........

With today's attitude some lawyer will sue for pain and suffering and they'll change the mechanical code so all exhaust vents must have steps and handles to allow escape if one gets stuck in there.

Legal Talk...

elizabeths.....one can not ROB a building.....one burglarizes it!

Has this ever worked?

Has this ever worked? Every year one or two idiots try this and get stuck. I say, take them out back and shoot them. They are nothing but a drain on an already dying society.

OK, if the idiot is willing to work off the debt, to the store, fire rescue, and society, I say let him make this right, but if he fails to take responsibility, then shoot him.

that must be some chicken

I get hungry in the middle of the night sometimes, too.

well...here's your sign....

ok...so we're going to break in to a place...with a very small vent opening...in a place that he knows...where he knows the routine...BEFORE a big weekend...when there won't be anything but startout cash...in the safe?...smart...real smart......wouldn't want to have considered 2 doors down where there's a ton of $$ from halloween costumes and no vents to get stuck in....well...at least the gene pool might be a little less with bozo in jail.....
